We have covered the definitive slashers of the 70's now for the two most popular slashers films of the 80's Sean S. Cunningham's Friday the 13th and Wes Craven's A Nightmare On Elm Street.

P.S We are not talking about the entire series, just the openers.

Damn, this is the toughest one yet since I absolutely love both films and most of the sequels to each.

Eh... I guess I'll go with F13, but only by a micron!

Sorry, but I just can't vote for one or the other without taking the sequels into account. For better or worse, they reflect backwards and change how one views the original.

    FRIDAY THE 13TH.

Opener-wise I think I could re-watch NOES more than F13. Although both are awesome, the imagination presented in Nightmare out-does what Friday has to offer.

Friday the 13th for me. Not even in my wildest nightmares could Freddy win.

Growing up I always liked the Friday the 13th series more. Now when I watch both of these films. I have to admit that A Nightmare on Elm Street is the better movie.

I agree with this.Friday the 13th is easily a better series in my opinion but the first Nightmare was better than the first Friday.

This was so tough I went with Friday the 13th tho. The cheezy FX at the end of NOES (the window scene) gave Friday the edge here.

This time it was an easy vote for me. Friday 13th part 1 represents the rare case where the first one in a series isn't the best imo.
Also, it's "only" a slasher movie (a well made one, though) with a simplistic formula and therefore doesn't come near the far more imaginative and frightening premise of the first NoES.

I know I am subjecting myself to a lot of hating, but come on - the first Friday the 13th is a TERRIBLE movie. The pace is all over the place (and in the climax, there is no momentum, nothing going on until Mrs. Vorhees arrives). I mean, how can you have an almost-static scene of the leading lady making herself coffee when there's 20 minutes left of the film? That scene draaaaags along for I-don't-know-how-many minutes. Felt like forever. And it did not in any way "build up suspense". It was just a static shot of someone making coffee.

I'm sorry, but I rewatched F13 a few weeks ago and I thought it was awful. I actually couldn't believe how bad it was. I even considered getting rid of the DVD, but decided to keep it for historical value.

NOES is a masterpiece, especially compared to F13.

Went with NOES. I can always sit down and watch Friday films with my friends (and some booze). They're a riot. But the NOES films--and yes, some of them are far from good--require/command a bit more...attention from the audience, or at least from me.

Ouch, _pi_ hating on F13th.... It's cool, this won't turn into a "Lost Boys" debate, right? Haha.

Anyway I picked Friday The 13th strictly because I enjoy that series much more than than NOES. I also really enjoy the NOES series, so it was a tight match, but Jason is probably my iconic slasher/horror movie figure, so I had to stick to my guns.

This one is harder than hell. I love them both. A Nightmare On Elm Street is such a good, scary movie and watching it for the first time was one of my favorite cinema moments. It is probably the better of the two movies. However, in the end, Friday the 13th is probably my favorite so it got my vote. There is a certain sort of simple excitement in how the first several Friday the 13ths were filmed that I really adore.

I'm a fan of both, but the choice was easy: FRIDAY THE 13TH. For me, NIGHTMARE had shoddy effects and a premise that, while totally fucking cool, wasn't really very scary. FRIDAY came into my life at a very influential age and had a profound effect on me; NIGHTMARE came along when I was older and more jaded.

I love 'em both, but Jason has my heart.
