If we're going back this way I'll get on track.

Few are original anymore, as it's almost impossible to be since there's such a rich history of horror movies through the decades. Anything you can think of is bound to have been done before weather the writer/director has even seen it before. Roth and everyone else making movies in this day and age falls into this, so it's almost a moot discussion.
I give him props for making movies I enjoy and not pg-13 teeny-booper Japanese remakes like the majority seem to be doing. I also give him props for putting his balls out knowing they're gonna get kicked repeatedly.

That about sums it up for me. Hostel is far from being original but managed to piss off lots of people so I'm ok with that. I'm all for controversy, the more the better. I just hope Hostel 2 will pack twice the punch as Hostel did :D

I could care less if a movie is original, there are some types of movies I just can't get enough of. When people complain about a movie being unoriginal what they are really complaining about is the movie being cliche, seeing the ending from a mile away.

This was not the case for Hostel! I didn't know what the fuck was going to happen towards the end of the movie.
The guy who I thought would make it to the end died! I thought for sure that Paxton was going to get his and I was expecting it but he kept escaping! The killer who I thought was going to star in Hostel 2 had his throat cut.

The movie kept me guessing and from that I derived entertainment.

Also Robert McKee the author of "Story" had this to say about "originality":

"Difference for the sake of difference is as empty as slavishly following commercial imperatives."

Okay, first of all, the story is called "Trucks", not Maximum Overdrive. And two, Cell is nothing like "Trucks". I have no idea why you are comparing them at all.

Sorry Baggio, I confess I find your entire argument regarding originality unsupportable. If this were truly a fault of Hostel then every single Vampire flick made after Nosferatu suffers the same criticism - along with every Frankenstein movie, murder mystery and so on. You're grouping sub genres and using a films association with them as being "unoriginal". I can't fathom how that is a valid argument to be honest. I'm trying - but I can't get my brain around it. Can't you name some original flicks for balance?

To be honest I thought the originality angle was the only one worth pursuing further, though that seems like it might well be a dead end too. The criticisms made of Roth and Hostel just seem like whining to me. Not trying to insult anyone, but there hasn't been a single legitinate criticism as far as I can see. Of course, it's normal everyone can't agree.

Believe me, I've seen my share of "hack" directors, Roth isn't close to being one. But then, it's not like there's a universal definition we could agree upon. The personal hatred for the guy is simply coloring some peoples views. Doesn't make sense to me, but there you go. Just don't bother watching the guys films, seems like an easy thing to do ;)

Okay, you all know I have not seen Hostel yet but the impression I'm getting from this thread -- and I think maybe some people don't get this -- is that it's not completely about sex and violence in movies... it's a matter of degrees. Not to mention that if a person doesn't like the characters or plot or doesn't think there's much of one, the nudity surely isn't going to help matters unless they're interested in seeing the people who are nude. At least that's what I've gotten from this discussion anyway. Female nudity in a movie probably won't do a damn thing for the straight female audience or for gay males and won't make a movie more palatable. All of you straight guys though, it's a bonus for you.

If your real reason for liking the movie is that you like the tits, why not admit it? No need to dance around the fact.

    *shrug*

It's a societal quirk, Luna. Straight women don't seem to mind seeing naked women on the screen. Straight men can't stand to watch naked men on the screen. It's not that any of it makes sense, it's conditioning. :D

I'm finally figuring out the views on Hostel. The big problem for the haters is that they hate Roth personally. I can't think of a single director I hate that much - but hey, if I did I'd simply not watch their films. Calling him a "hack" is, for me, just a silly statement. Without a doubt he's made a competent film, far more competent than many genre films out there. It stands to reason not everyone will like his work.

    Still, back to nudity.......

Yes! Yes! Yes! It's such a small point, but I have been unable to make it for months. Now at least I feel like I am not just talking into the abyss. It's a miracle. A horrordvds miracle.

Don't worry, unless he casts one of my favorite actors that I can't resist, I am done with the career of one Eli Roth. There are much more interesting hack directors to support.

I'm sure Luna edited that final line into her post after I replied.

Anyway, I'll wager there isn't a single person here who likes Hostel simply because they like "the tits". It doesn't hurt the film at all, but anyone who likes it just for that ought to go buy some porno, there are way more of them in that. :)

I don't know, this post was awfully enthusiastic about the T&A... hey, he was honest at least. :D

I didn't say it'd be one's sole reason, but for some it could be a large part of it for sure.

 The sex was singled out by detrators as a negative, but really, there's really not all that much in the movie. People on here would have seen far more or the same in other movies I can assure you. We've just been on that topic. I could just as easily of talked about ankles.... urgh :D

Well, I guess the only way I'll really be able to give an informed opinion not based solely on what I've read here is when I actually see it for myself. I've only been going by this thread and the other. :D

Yeah but there's better makeup to cover the implant scars on big budget horror like this.:D If I wanted tits, I'd watch some 80's slashers or porn where they were real.

Luna, we can all tell you're smart and should've done that already. Just give it a try. Put it on netflix or dl a rip.

Everyone I've shown this to as liked if not loved it. Of course the card-guys dig it for the tits, gore & twistedness. My GF loves it since it starts out like Eurotrip, and having grown up travelling throughout Europe loves flicks like that. My ex-roommate (a straight female for those keeping count) says "it rocks" cuz it scares her. My dad won't watch it since he hates everything and doesn't watch movies, but I bet he'd dig it.:)

I will just say that as a fair person (imo) I don't think Roth is a bad filmmaker. I have enjoyed both Hostel and Cabin Fever, but I don't love either film. Cabin Fever had that pointless scene with the karate, and Hostel had way too much homophobic undertones. I don't know much about him personally but from what i hear he sounds like an arrogant homophobe among other things. I've heard the same about Tarantino, but I like his films also. To say Roth is talentless is a stupid statement.

It also had WAY too many misanthropic undertones, I mean, some of the characters had such hatred for humans that they paid to torture them!

This is obviously a reflection of Eli Roth's attitude towards mankind.

He's probably a human in real life but just too scared to admit it.
