If we're going back this way I'll get on track. Few are original anymore, as it's almost impossible to be since there's such a rich history of horror movies through the decades. Anything you can think of is bound to have been done before weather the writer/director has even seen it before. Roth and everyone else making movies in this day and age falls into this, so it's almost a moot discussion. I give him props for making movies I enjoy and not pg-13 teeny-booper Japanese remakes like the majority seem to be doing. I also give him props for putting his balls out knowing they're gonna get kicked repeatedly.
