I toyed with the idea of getting a PS3 early on since it could play BD but I really didn't have any interest in the PS3 otherwise and they're also not region free so I passed. The first BD I bought was the BFI Salò release, I actually only bought it because I was ordering something else from Amazon UK at the time and figured out that the cost of the DVD I wanted and the Salò BD was about the same as buying just the same DVD from a domestic retailer. I didn't have a player and had no specific plans to get one since at the time there were no affordable region free players but a few months later that Momitsu player came out and since the reviews were good it wasn't long before I broke down and bought one.
I haven't bought a Blu-ray player yet, but my first Blu-ray DVD was the Ghostbusters disc a few months back. The original Ghostbusters standard DVD was the first DVD I ever bought, so when the Blu-ray came out, I wanted it to be the first Blu-ray I bought too (even if I didn't own anything to play it on).
I officially went Blu on October 9, 2007 when I bought my PS3 (I already had the HD DVD add-on for the 360). My first Blu-ray movies were Deja Vu, Pearl Harbor, Day of the Dead and 28 Weeks Later. The first Blu-ray I watched was Day of the Dead.
I made the switch to BLU after I had already started my HD-DVD collection, so I had both for awhile. My 1st one was 30 days of night which i got signed from dark delicacies.
I also made the switch when the PS3 launched. I didn't own it myself but a roommate at the time did. I knew I would buy one for myself eventually so I bought a few blu rays. The first one was the briefcase Blade Runner. Amazing. I had that pre-ordered since it first popped up on Amazon. Actually I still have a second one sealed. I thought it would be really rare and I could sell it for a bunch on ebay. Now it's still in the Amazon box on a shelf. I think I mentioned this before but it's becoming a tradition. My first DVD was also Blade Runner when it came out in '97 or '98. But this has to be the definitive collection for BR for a long time. Maybe on the 50th anniversary and we have interactive brain implant movies they will top the 5 disc blu ray edition.
I bought a PS3 when they started phasing out the 60 gig models that were backward compatible with the PS2. The first Blu-ray I purchased was 300.
first blu was Bladerunner. i went to the store to get a new tv, and the new bladerunner dvd 5disc set when it came out, however when i was buying the tv i was told it came with a free blu-ray player i swithed the dvd for a blu-ray and have been buying em since
I first made the switch in March of 2008 (around when I started compiling the now defunct blu ray horror list ) I wanted to wait until the format war had a clear winner. My first disc was Day of the Dead (1985)
I bought a PS3 2 years ago (october, 2007) and from then on I find it hard to watch SD-DVD hahaha. My first purchase was a new release at the time, The Reaping.
My first BD disc purchase, Classic Media's Gojira, is on its way as I type this. I've heard it's a crap disc, but it's cheap ($12.99) and as a fan I want to check it out and possibly make it the first BD review for my site. I'm looking forward to getting better discs to see what BD can really do, but money's real tight so I'll probably stick with my old DVDs, and library checkouts, for now.
I made the switch over to Blu-Ray when I wanted to see the titles in HD that were exclusive to the format,( I already had HD DVD). The first title I purchased on the format was Cronenberg's The Fly.
Amazing contest!! Thanks Rhett, Dave and Fox!! I jumped onto buying the discs before I actually had a player. The format war wasn't over yet, but blu-ray (with it's cooler technology & larger capacity) seemed to make the most sense to me. My first blu-ray discs were the Anchor Bay releases of the original "Halloween" & "Dawn of the Dead". I bought them in December of 2007, which is 10 years after I bought my first 2 dvds which were the exact same titles from Anchor Bay. My Sony blu-ray player didn't come until 5 months later in May...so all I could do was look at the discs lol, I was skeptical that the improvement wouldn't be too much. But when I finally got to view them, I was blown away!! Long live blu-ray!! Good luck to all!!
My first Blu-Ray was 300. It had just come out when I got a PS3 and figured the visual style would lend itself well as an example for the format. Of course, I didn't realize I was also buying a really shitty flick  My second purchase of The Fountain was much wiser
PS3 & King Kong I made the switch about 2 months ago when an old friend from high school wound up with an extra PS3(non-backward compatible) that he needed to get rid of, so he took a road trip and brought it to me. My first Blu-Ray was Peter Jackson's King Kong, which I actually bought before I had my hands on the PS3. It looks great in high-def.
Nearly 100 submissions...thanks for all the input, folks. Great to hear everyone's stories, it looks like most have made the jump to HiDef already, so hopefully these wins help! The three winners are... fattyjoe37 zompirejoe Johnny Macabre fattyjoe37 doesn't even have a player yet, so I can't imagine a better incentive! Congrats, guys. Now prepare for some contest craziness coming up in October...
Congrats to the winners. I enjoyed reading everyones stories and it was nice to see I wasn't the only one that picked up Casino Royale as the first.
