This is probably my main concern with buying the PS3. I have a few DVDs that are R2 and R4, and I need to know if the PS3 will play them. Also, will it upconvert them?

Forget your other question, because the answer to your first one is NO. It's not fucking region free for SD. Which annoys the heck out of me.

    Annoyed? Sure.

I'm pretty sure the PS3 doesn't even play PAL. It's been a while since I tried it, but I seem to recall putting in a region free PAL disc and getting an error message.

But they are definitely region locked for DVDs.

    I wonder if there's a firmware hack.

Damnit, I was hoping that if I bought a PS3, it would be a one stop shop for all of my DVD/gaming needs. I guess I'll still have my LG player plugged in for my PAL discs. :(

I need to find a hack!

Just to clear things up. PS3 is region free for games. You can import any PS3 games from anywhere.

And while Blu-Ray can be region locked, it usually isn't implemented. You can check here for a list of which Blu-Rays are/aren't locked:

But in regards to standard DVDs, you're screwed.
