Very glad to see that Kino is releasing the UNCUT version of Deranged. This is a must buy.

My copy of Deranged just arrived from DVDWorldUSA

The 2 transfers aren't the same, Arrow's has much more natural film grain present. It's pretty noticeable if you've got a decent size TV (60"+)

The Kino release is a BD25, Arrow's is a BD50 and it shows.

The interview with Scott Spiegel is pretty based. He talks about getting hold of the film on bootleg and working with Rberts Blosom on The Quick and The Dead. Asking him about the film and giving him a copy on vhs and his reaction after seeing it for the first time in years.

    The Crimson Cult review

    http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/16864/thecrimsoncult.html

But someone on Amazon had some not so nice things to say about it:

Once again, Kino has slapped the easiest available copy they could get their hands on onto a disc and charge premium $$$ for it. This time they didn't bother to try and clear the music rights issues (which are admittedly a pain in the @#$!) and so viewers of this US Edition will have to suffer through a synth soundtrack that was redone sometime in the 1980s and sounds completely wrong for the movie, which is a Gothic horror from the early 70s. Boooo!

Also once again, Arrow's UK release trumps its shoddy US counterpart by including not only the original soundtrack but much better extras as well. If you have a Region-free player, you might want to steer clear of this one and pick up that superior release. And if you don't have a Region-free player, for crying out loud - get one!!! :)

There are some distributors which hand select their movies and take care to present them in a way they know the fans want (Code Red, Vinegar Syndrome, Arrow, Severin, Synapse, Blue Underground etc...) Then there are others who make deals with movie companies, release what they offer, as they offer it and rake in the dough - Kino definitely falls into this latter category!

actually Curse of the Crimson Altar, is not put out by Arrow in the UK, it's put out by Odeon, I have it coming to me in the mail from the UK right now. I didn't get the US release because of the soundtrack issues, the UK release does have the correct soundtrack. Also the film wasn't an early 70's film it was made in the 60's, so they got some of their facts wrong lol, and I'm not sure if the Kino is a bad transfer or not, but they did get the soundtrack wrong and that was enough of a reason for me to buy the UK release.

Weird, but I also have the UK disc arriving to me any day now...grabbed it really cheap on a recent Zavvi sale last week.

I didn't mess with the Kino release due to the same issues. There was a comparison here.

haha Katatonia that's the same review I saw and it's what made me buy the Odeon UK blu ray instead of the Kino blu ray. I usually check out reviews first before getting a blu ray to make sure of things like is it really uncut, is it a tampered with soundtrack, etc. Because you never know what companies will do to a film these days. On blu ray they are now even cropping films that are meant to be seen 1.66:1 to 1.78:1 just to make them fit a widescreen TV sometimes and it can very much hurt a films appearance in some cases so I read reviews for things like that. UK releases tend not to do the aspect ratio altering because they are used to the 1.66:1 aspect ratio in Europe but in America it's not so much a common aspect ratio. And WORST of all is when companies release a 4X3 film in widescreen that's even worse then when VHS was doing widescreen in 4X3. But yeah Curse of the Crimson Alter I look forward to, can't wait to hear the commentary with Barbara Steele, and see the 50 minute overview with Christopher Lee. I am really anxious to get my Kino July releases of Erotic Rites of Frankenstein, Madhouse, and House of 1000 Dolls, not sure what I'll pick up from Kino in August yet, I"ve not paid attention to their August release schedule yet.
