Oh ok. I will say the Rawhead Rex one is pretty dam good. Good job Kino!
Update on my Kino order. It was there when I got home today. PO must have switched packages to different address yesterday, everything is fine now. One Blu movie was back ordered, so I guess that will get here whenever.
That's a pretty damn nice looking package, especially that slip!
I never did like that last piece of cover art though.
The cover looks too good for the movie inside it.
How is Rawhead Rex? I've never seen it.
Turns out Kino fucked up The Good, the Bad and the Ugly though. What a shame...
Seems like no one will ever get that movie right.
Rawhead Rex is deliciously bad, but fun and has some real Barker moments. I'm sure a lot of interest is nostalgia-driven, but it's an easy day one for me.
How did they fuck it up?
Well first off, they screwed with the color timing. They said they were gonna remove the yellow from the incorrectly color-timed 4K MGM release from a few years back, but they just ended up making the whole thing look washed out. There are also compression issues, black levels are problematic, the "theatrical cut" is apparently not the true 1967 theatrical cut either. They based it off the 1998 MGM DVD (which had its own issues) and not an actual 1967 source for reference.
I get that a lot of the problems on the 4K transfer (the oversaturated yellows and greens) were baked into the master they were given by MGM, so they could only do so much, but compression issues? Come on. What the fuck.
Oh and the special features carried over from the MGM release are now really choppy and bad quality.
Hopefully Arrow gets it or something.
Sad thing is, I really really love this movie (and Leone) which means I'll probably still end up getting it. After all, it does include the original mono track and it's the closest thing we've had to the theatrical cut in HD. There's also a new commentary on the theatrical cut by Tim Lucas and he does great commentaries so...there's that.
They're also releasing Fistful of Dollars and For a Few Dollars More so let's see what happens with those. The current MGM transfers suck.
Yeah, I'll still be getting it. But disappointing that it's not the definitive release it looked like it was going to be...
Ugh, I was going to say "what the hell" and buy it for the Lucas commentary alone... But perhaps that will resurface somewhere instead? But then... If it wasn't really the theatrical version he was watching, maybe a corrected release won't carry it over because it would require reworking of the commentary's audio.
Are purchases really worth it just for commentaries? How much replay value do you get out of them? I don't get it.
Normally I agree with you but sometimes I like Lucas' commentaries more than the film.
And his Bava and Franco ones are amazing.
depends on the movie...i've bought releases just for the supplements in the past.
The only commentary that I've ever enjoyed more than the movie itself was for Jack-o, and even then I only listened to it once.
Well I don't usually listen to a commentary more than once either. But I still love them.
Did you get to check out the screenshots in the highdefdigest review yet, Matt? Obviously they don't shed much light on the alleged compression issues, but the color timing and saturation level don't look as bad as some are claiming.
Based on the screenshots here, I think I'll probably grab this release once the inevitable sale price comes along.
Yeah actually I picked it up today. I have to admit, I actually do think it looks quite good. I understand that people are upset that this isn't the "true" theatrical cut, but the image quality isn't nearly as problematic as people were making it out to be. And the mono track sounds fantastic.
I'm actually pretty pleased with it. Haven't checked out the quality of the special features though. Apparently they're a mess.
Thanks for the report. What you guys say always carries a lot more weight with me than all of the blabber from other forums.
