Wow, who woulda thunk this would cause such a ruckus?

Just a couple of things...it's funny how as I get older how irrelevant most music, especially current music, becomes to me. I listen to film-related stuff, a few electronic groups, a couple of other things, and that's about it.

The other thing....I remember a lot of the same stuff being said about Madonna during the early 80s that is being said now about Lady Gaga. You never know.

Heh...my friend said exactly the same thing last week. Seems like a lot of people (even press) are comparing her to Madonna.

When I saw her acoustic piano version of Poker Face I have to admit I was surprised to see that she really CAN sing, unlike Madonna, but it really didn't change my opinion of her current output. Maybe if she turns it around and reinvents herself by releasing a career killing CD of classic standards with full orchestral back up, she'll gain my respect. Hell, if she just gets a different producer maybe that's all it will take. Still don't like her. I would much rather listen to the bubblegum pop of Taylor Swift than this meatball any day.

If you're referring to me, in any way, this isn't about people saying bad things about her in particular. If they think she's not talented, that's one thing. They have a right to their opinion. And hell, if she was doing something really bad like abusing people, stealing, raping- whatever... she would deserve outright hate.

But this is about the stupid criticisms and character attacks that, like I said, far too many female performers and singers get before people know anything about them. Just based on their looks, people already viciously insult them. I'm saying the people who would do that kind of thing - are not funny nor worth applauding.

I feel like I'm arguing with a stupid wannabe-mirror. You're not deflecting anything I've said about you onto me. No way, no how. You said she should do porn then later accused her of acting like a slut (even if you didn't say the word, you more than implied it!) because her target audience is young teenagers. You did that to justify your obvious low opinion of her for not being a musician you at all respect. But- don't pretend you didn't say the things you said. They're printed right on these pages. And then you attempted to lecture me on freely expressed sexuality while still criticising Lady Gaga for doing it too. If that's not hypocritical - nothing is! You criticized her for dancing explicitly on TV but said she should do porn. That's low and smiley, Anthro. And definitely sexist.

I doubt you can take that back now. You certainly can't make me forget you said it. Especially not by way of I'm rubber, you're glue replies.

If it weren't for your bullshit responses trying to defend your idiotic remarks and then pathetically backtracking by laying the blame on me- we wouldn't still be having this discussion!

When I'm arguing with you, my I.Q. more than doubles. So, you're not qualified to assign genius labels. That argument is the dumbest fucking thing I may have ever heard on this board (yes, dumber than Chunkblower's love for Michael Bay, aka: The Cinematic Antichrist). And again, further proof that you're getting desperate and sloppy in your backtracking.

There's humor, and then there's classless and hateful remarks that don't register as humor in any way. Your comments here fall into the latter category.

But you were comparing, no? You gave examples of "clean cut" female singers that have talent in comparison to Lady Gaga, who is trashy (this is your description of her) and has no talent (also your description). You were comparing the women.

Now on to Pink. That's a little better comparison & example. But on one hand Pink from time to time uses her sexuality to "sell" a song. And dresses with half her body hanging out. In fact she has been naked in magazines. So where's the difference?

I'm not trying to be a wise guy, just having a civil discussion here.

Those of you who liked the acoustic version of Poker Face should check out the acoustic version of Paparazzi, its just as good, if not better.

hmm, I'm not sure Pink is a good example against pop stars that use T&A. I think Pink is naked as often as Lady Gaga. In one video she is completely nude strategically covered by petals, in another she is topless with tape over her nipples, shes posed nude for magazines etc...

    That is a good version.

Exactly. That's what I was just saying. And her outfit for the VMA awards performance 2009. And that outfit she was wearing for the song "So What" in the 2008 VMA.

Not to mention what she wears in concerts. Just check youtube.

But yes Pink can sing very well(live) & is talented. As is Lady Gaga. Sings live (which is not common for faster dance/pop singers like Britney & such) Kylie is another one that sings live. But again Pink & Lady are very different type of singers. You need females like Britney to use as examples against Gaga. Fast dance/pop type club music. Pussycat Dolls, stuff like that... Not Pink.

But to use Pink for an example of someone that doesn't use sex to help her career. Come on man. They all do it if they have the ability.

    Seriously?

    5 pages on Lady Gaga?

At any rate saw her on SNL and was shocked at how great her voice was. Not my style of music, but she (?) can sing.

Oooohhhh, getting really touchy there. I must admit this is the most entertaining I've found this board in awhile.
Funny, how you put together a half-assed answer while basically ignoring my rebuttal and there you go with that slut remark again. Tsk tsk.
You want some cheese with that whine?? Never denied anything I said, just stated that you can't put together a logical argument without looking like a hypocrite and totally embarassing yourself. You're also a fucking liar and that's unquestionable.
Did I miss something? Have you been elected Nazi dictator of what's appropriate to post on this board. Plenty of people agreed and did'nt have a problem with my comments. If you don't like it that's your tough shit, move to Iran.
Reality check-you're an insignificant member of a board that discusses horror film nothing more, one who's clueless about music as well. Don't try to come off scholarly and try to be smarter than you really are, it's not working for you. Your broad generalizations of heavy metal prove you don't know shit. At one point Hendrix was considered metal, as were Cream and Led Zeppelin, you want to pretend Lady Gaga has more impact and talent than them. Dream on.
If you double an I.Q. of zero, it's still going to be zero, Daisy.

You think so? You haven't proved it.

Again, your pathetic attempt to spin this. I have every right to speak out against something I don't agree with. And that is what I was doing. Did that go over your head? Can't say it surprises me.

You're the only one in this thread who seems to have missed the huge sign reading - "I Just Don't Like It." No one else is challenging that. I already said, several times - music is music and anyone can have whatever opinion they want to. But you don't see me assaulting the character of the people in the bands I don't like just because I don't like them. Not liking the music isn't enough for you - you have to insult the artists / performers too. And almost never on the basis of their talent.

So, yeah - keep on spinning this. But I'm not spinning, I'm on firm ground. I don't like metal because I don't care about it. I enjoy pop and many different forms of rock.

As usual, Anthro- you're spinning so much you can't keep track of anything. I never said that and I'm not pretending anything. So, why don't you quit flapping your gums and prove something already! Prove I ever said Lady Gaga is a serious artist!

  15. Gotta say I was thinkin' the exact same thing (as well as what KR stated) just a moment ago.

This whole thread is kind of hilarious.

The way I see it: In less than 2 years, Lady Gaga has become an international superstar, with countless singles charting #1 in countless countries. She's done this in spite of having a heavily, HEAVILY stylized image that is absolutely not mainstream.

She's respected by music critics, already has a huge, devoted fanbase, and anyone who will give her a chance can see that she can sing and perform quite admirably live on stage, regardless of what they think of her music. Even Madonna (MADONNA) has "accepted" her as the heir to the pop-princess throne. Plus she's going to be a billionaire before the end of 2010.

    In conclusion:

    Lady Gaga = 1
    HorrorDVDs haters = 0

You know what? Now that I think about it, I definitely agree 100% with what you just said. My friend today (who is a huge Lady Gaga fan) was showing me her performance on SNL the other night and I've seen a few vids of her playing piano on youtube...this girl's got talent. She can actually sing, dance and play the piano EXTREMELY well. She's not just good at piano, she reaches the levels of brilliance. Coming from someone who played piano for well over a decade...this girl's got some fucking talent. And her costumes...they're pretty out of the ordinary. She has the most original sense of fashion for a performer to come along in a while.

Her music? I think it's kinda catchy, but not really all that brilliant (not as brilliant as her ability to play the piano), but I think her music will get better with time.

I don't like her music. Other than that I could give a flying fuck about her. Hate? No. So I didn't vote.

    Hmmm.

I've listened to her album and there are only three songs worth listening to more than once: Poker Face, Lovegame, and maybe Paparazzi. They are radio-friendly pop songs with very solid hooks. Her voice is passable. I respect that, but have to admit that what we measure her against is the lowest common denominator.

I'm indifferent to her image. Bowie exploded all those rules decades ago. There isn't much there that's new or fresh to my mind.

I'm predisposed to like her in general. From what little I've read she seems to have integrity.
