    From Icons of Fright...

    http://iconsoffright.com/news/2008/03/is_madman_marz_coming_back.html

"At this past weekend's FEAR FEST convention in Dallas, Texas, we stopped by former Icons interviewee Paul Ehlers table, the man who played "Madman Marz" in the 80's slasher cult-classic MADMAN, and we couldn't help notice an interesting item among his 8 x 10's & fantasy knives.

A teaser for a new MADMAN movie.

Framed on his table was an 8 x 10 photo that read "MADMAN MARZ: THE LEGEND LIVES", "He'll find the Heart of Terror and Rip it Out!" (Coming)

When asked about it, Paul confirmed that yes, there is a script for a brand new MADMAN movie written by his son Jonathan Ehlers and co-scripted by Paul himself. They're using the original title for the original film, which was MADMAN MARZ: THE LEGEND LIVES and it sounds like this new MADMAN acts as both a sequel/remake.

An independent company is attached and they've got a few locations locked down for a potential shoot later this year."

wow...I really, really, really hope this pans out! How about you, rhett?

Madman was the first slasher I saw theatrically. Loved it and it scared the shit outta me when I was young. Still like it alot today and would definitely be up for a sequel.

I think it's a bit late to continue this magic. We'll see.

I don't know what to think. If it's a remake then I'm just not interested. If it's a sequel, well, I'll say I'm intrigued.

As much as this intrigues me....I can't help but bring attention to the fact that the slasher film is dead. Has been for years. Why won't this work? Well...it's not 1981 anymore. It would be a "for retro horror fans only" kinda thing. Which is cool, but I mean...not a very smart idea when marketing a remake/sequel to a film 28 years after the fact.

It would be great to see a continuation of the Mars legend, but without the original writer/director, this strikes me more as a fan project/publicity stunt to get Ehlers more traffic at horror conventions. It would have to have some campfire legend and music to make it worthwhile too...that's the thing that continues to charm me about the original. Oh, and that pulling of the axe bit, too.

Why don't you step up to the plate rhett, and attach yourself as director. I mean, they should hire you immediately after hearing your Madman Marz famdom speech and see that you made a short film called Heroin Cake. :D

It sounds cool enough, but I just don't know about these remake/sequels 25+ years after the fact. :eek2:

Thats ludicrous......Paul is genuinely interested in seeing a scary slasher movie made again and this has NOTHING on earth to do with "traffic at shows". Paul does the shows for the FANS...............................Larry

Oh, I know Paul loves horror films, no doubt, but everyone has to make a living, right? If he's never made a profit from his convention showings (directly or indirectly through exposure for his weapon-making) then I apologize, but sirens go off whenever nepotism is afoot, no matter how good the intention! Don't get me wrong, I love MADMAN and I'd be all for seeing a sequel, I'd just want to see it done right. I'm sure any treatment, though, is better than that originally proposed sequel with a biker gang on the hunt for the madman. We all know how THE HILLS HAVE EYES II turned out.

Hey, I'll direct if you promise to screen it over in Saskatoon during a late night extravaganza. Deal?
