Massacre Video - Updates/Releases

  1. I finally grabbed their DVD of Black Past. I've never seen it but I loved Littenbach's The Burning Moon and Premutos.

Really looking forward to Fiend! Every time I've seen a post from them on my Facebook feed, I've asked "when's Fiend coming out?" Their last response was one of thinly veiled annoyance. :)

Guess that means Fiend may not be anytime soon? Haven't seen either, but I am interested in both Fiend & Enter the Devil.

They said something along the lines of "we'll release it when it's finished." The post above states early 2018, but Massacre Video seems to work at a Synapse pace.

I haven't seen Fiend either, but I thoroughly enjoyed The Alien Factor and would love to see more Don Dohler.

From my Cinema Arcana FB page:

Recorded a new commentary track tonight with actor George Stover and cinematographer Richard Geiwitz for Don Dohler's FIEND (1980), coming to Blu-Ray next year from Massacre Video. The film tells the tale of a seriously-mustached supernatural boogeyman who terrorizes the suburbs of Baltimore, sucking the life essence out of every man, woman and child unlucky enough to make his acquaintance. It's up to an annoyed, pipe-smoking neighbor to stop him. A purposely intimate, confined film from do-it-yourself legend Dohler, FIEND is a darker, meaner outing than his more high-profile alien epics, and hopefully this upcoming restoration, featuring the first new scan the title's received in 30+ years, will find it a new generation of fans. Expect more details in the coming months.

Super excited for Enter The Devil. It will be a blind buy, but looks right up my alley. And if the tech merits are on par with Hack-O-Lantern, it should look fantastic.

I rented Enter the Devil once and enjoyed it well enough. It's a modest, low key but effective. The print, from SWV, was pretty scratched up so I am curious to see how this looks now on blu.

Final Stab coming soon from Massacre Video. 2K Master from the 35mm camera negative. Screengrab below:

I'm actually excited about this one. I have the widescreen Canadian DVD, but it's non-anamorphic. I didn't like it when I rented the fullscreen VHS, but loved it when I saw it in 2.35:1.

I know a lot of people are going to be upset that Massacre is releasing something that isn't from the '70s or '80s, but I love that companies are starting to dip their toes into the straight-to-DVD slasher films of the early-mid '00s like Abominable, The Backlot Murders, etc. They're fun.

I received mine a few days ago from Diabolik. It's a pretty cool movie, decent transfer... but like most Massacre Blu-rays, it only has lossy audio at a measly 192 kbps (DVD quality)

The bonus "California Connection" film on the Blu-ray is definitely hardcore XXX, from a worn VHS source. o_O

Surprisingly I got a shipping confirmation today for Enter the Devil. Much better outcome than the email I received three days ago. Look forward to seeing this for the first time.

Maybe i'm the only one but...

    * the DVD of Enter The Devil plays at half speed on my laptop and LG DVD-player, with which I mean that the audio and subs play fine but the image plays unnaturally slow
    * my Xbox One X started up the BluRay and it didn't progress from a black screen, while my PS4 didn't have any problems whatsoever

no unsurmountable problems for me but annoying nonetheless

I haven't watched a lot of older Asian horror movies (or newer ones, for that matter). I do like the Thai crocodile horror Chorake (which Synapse announced some time ago) and find the Shaw Brothers production Killer Snakes grimly effective. The Devil looks quite disgusting, which piques my curiosity. Looks like the actors are gulping up live worms. I can't imagine what kind of money I would demand if I were asked to put a slimy animal - dead or alive - in my mouth.

I haven't seen The Devil, but I've seen some similar Hong Kong and Taiwan movies with the actors letting bugs and snakes crawl in and out their mouths. They don't even really seem that bothered by it. There's one called Centipede Horror where they put live Giant Centipedes in someone's mouth, it's amazing. I wouldn't want to be in the same building with one of those things.
