MONSTER SQUAD REUNION
I remember seeing this at the movies and thinking it was really cool. Then a year later it came out on video and I looked forward to it, only to realize it was pretty lame. I was about 12 or 13 at the time. Guess it was past it's experation date.
I've seen a lot of love for this film over the years and it always surprises me. If you love this film, how old were you when you first saw it? I'm wondering how much Nostalgia has to do with it (meaning 'the love'.) Personally speaking, I have more of a soft spot for SATURDAY THE 14TH. It's about 5 or 6 years older, but it kind of covers the same turf.
Great film. Its like Goonies vs. Monsters.
I'd love to go... but I'd also love to see an official DVD release before the decade is gone!
I saw it on cable as a teenager. And thought it was pretty cool movie. For a movie that involved kids, it wasn't lame. Rated PG-13 if I'm correct. And in 1987 the PG-13 movie was still just coming into its own. So for a "kids" horror movie I thought it was pretty intense. If I'm correct I even think it made the cover of Fangoria. Plus I thought one of the key hooks was that the monsters were classic monsters. Dracula, etc... Strangely I don't think it did well at the theaters at all.
I guess they thought the success of The Goonies would bring in the audience. I like to know how many other PG / PG-13 "horror" movies involving kids or for kids. Because I don't think there is that many. And Monster Squad would rank as one of the best.
I also think it had pretty dam good production quality and FX if I remember right. Plus the director had some good horror "street cred" going into the project. He had that horror / "comedy" thing pretty much down. House , Night of the Creeps
P.S. - I always liked Saturday the 14th. Haven't seen it in years thou.
I went through a period during my teenage years thinking that a lot of things were pretty lame so I may have a higher opinion of Monster Squad if I went back and watched it now. At the time I thought Saturday the 14th was lame as well but now I've returned full circle and like it again.
Did you ever see that sequel to that movie? I never saw it.
No. I hear it's awful, but then, the original doesn't get any love from critics either.
i dont know what this is but ilick it anyway
The Monster Squad creature effects were sweet because STAN "MOTHER FUCKING" WINSTON did them! That is easily the best credit on his resume.
Saturday the 14th Strikes Back is actually not all that bad. It has Ray Walston as Gramps in it after all. Personally, I almost like it as much as the first one.
I have become fairly close with some of the cast members over the past couple of years including Pheobe and Sean (Bank & Gower) what is even more cool is that they themselves are fans of the movie....I wish I was in TX on that night though that would totally be Squadtastic!
maybe this will spark a potential region 1 dvd release finally? pleeeeeease
I can only hope a DVD release is in the cards somewhere down the line. When is someone gonna make us really happy and do a Dekker double feature on DVD (2 seperate discs, of course) for Night Of The Creeps and Monster Squad?
I love the movie. There's definitely nostaglia involved, but so what?
ATX......... damn be cool to go, but I spend to much money there.
I know that there is a Monster Squad reunion tomorrow night in Austin TX with Fred Dekker, Andre Gower and Ryan Lambert....DEADPIT.com has a reunion of their own, 2 seperate interviews with Ashley Bank (Pheobe) and Andre Gower (Sean) from The Monster Squad in the brand spankin' new DEADPIT EXTRAS section. Also included is an interview with Blood Diner's Carl Crew!
And this week's radio show features Allen Danziger from the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre. If you guys have some free time just give us a listen.....its a fun time!
O.K., I'm assessing that you actually run this show. And as much as I'd love to listen, I tried to listen to that Joe Dante show, but those fake put upon voices you guys do are sooooooo grating! Unless of course those are your real voices!
Those are their real voices! I'm from Southern Indiana, and I know an Eastern Kentucky accent when I hear it. Give it another try, and I'll bet you'll be hooked (like me). Deadpit Radio is great!
I'll second (or third) that. I loved the guys' accents, and after listening to the shows featuring Kevin Tenney, I am officially HOOKED!!!
