Well, I decided to get out of the dark ages and buy a DVD player. I put this off for a long time due to the fact my VHS horror collection is so huge. I kept thinking of the cost to replace the collection.

Anyway, I bought one movie this afternoon. The limited edition of Lucio Fulci's The Beyond.

I've never seen this movie and heard it's one of his best. I'm looking forward to watching it tonight.

I'm wanting to buy two more horror movies tomorrow. If you could only buy two movies for your DVD player, which would they be?

  3. Buy the Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Halloween. Both of these films looks fucking amazing compared to our old VHS copies! You won't be sorry.

Actually the first two dvd's I bought were Cronenberg's Shivers and Carpenter's The Thing. No regrets here [IMG]

If you get The Exorcist, I would recommend you get the 25th Anniversary Special Edition and not the Version You've Never Seen. IMO that release was not worth beans.

What's the difference between the two? I picked up "The Version You've Never Seen" but haven't opened it yet. They also did not have the annivesary edition.

So why is one so much better than the other?

I'm not going out on too much of a limb saying The Exorcist is a vastly superior film to Vampires.

I agree with DeepDownTraumaHound that TCM and Halloween are two of the best and most obvious DVD vs VHS upgrades, and I'd like to add the Friday the 13th series. I have seen those movies and TCM hundreds of times growing up and the DVDs show amazingly well what your missing in the P&S versions.

Thanks guys! Looks like "The Thing" is a popular one, if Best Buy has it, I'll get it. I'm also torn between Carpenters Vampire or the Exorcist. Guess it depends what they have in stock!

Hi. I got my DVD player about a month ago and the first DVD I purchased was also the Beyond tin. That's where all of my paychecks have gone towards since.

    Back to the Exorcist topic:

Like I said, I bought this DVD 2 days ago. I bought the "The version you've never seen before" version.

I buy DVD's for the movies and not necessarily the extra's.

Is the actual movie quality the same as the Exorcist "Anniversary Edition"? That's what's important to me.

    Thanks!

I have waiting on purchasing this movie because even though its one of my favorites because I knew the new version was on it's way but now I think I'm just gonna buy the 25th anyway. The added minutes actually make it drag a little (IMO), the original seems a little tighter. Of course this may be because thats the one that scared the living snot out of me as a kid, who knows?
From every review I have read the video quality is virtually identical. The audio on the other hand has been completely remastered.

So it's a matter of personal preference [IMG]

The 25th Anniversary edition sports a good transfer. (Not sure about TVYHNS DVD.)
ZK, if you enjoyed The Beyond, pick up Fulci's City of the Living Dead.
