Not sure where this thread belongs. Feel free to move if necessary.

Tom Petty suffered cardiac arrest last night, was put on life support and then taken off of it. He died today at age 66.

It sounds like the reports of his death, as reported by CBSNews.com, may have been a bit premature. He apparently is hospitalized and has been taken off of life support.

So, he's not dead? I hope he's not suffering. Fucking sucks.

The reporting on this has been absolutely awful. It's not even entirely clear if he's still on or off life support. Whatever his current state, it doesn't sound like he'll pull through.

As with the real world animal, media vultures don't always wait until death to start feasting.

If he is brain dead but on life support, then he is dead. My wife was brain dead almost 4 years ago after suffering an aneurysm and was on life support for a day before I had to make the hardest decision of my life. I know the reports say cardiac arrest, but it sounds like he is not responsive and completely reliant on the machines keeping him alive. Of course the time of death is not called until the last unsupported breath is taken. I certainly hope his family and loved ones make the right decision for him.

Appreciated. I didn't mean to derail the thread though. I can just relate to a situation like this.

    I'm so sorry Bro.

Yeah, basically Rolling Stone jumped the gun and caused a lot of heartache to Petty's immediate family.

I was never a huge Tom Petty fan, but I sure as hell can appreciate his music. I've been getting into jangly guitar songs heavily the last several years, and he really used that Rickenbacker guitar to great effect. My favorite song of his was easily The Waiting, and this version from SNL is an incredible performance of an already great song:

Won't argue about the video, it's aces. But the song? I find it one of the least interesting songs he ever recorded. Repetitive and dull, with a pedestrian chord progression. I know he was capable of better. But, I'm willing to listen to opinions. When the song came out, I distinctly remember a friend of mine (who was not ignorant about quality music) gushing about it being one of the best ever. I don't hear it. So if you can tell me what I'm missing, I'm all ears.
If I can ask, and with all due respect, is the video possibly influencing your opinion? There are quite a few songs I know that evoke the memory of the music video and immediately brings a positive association to the song even if it's not the greatest musically. See: Billy Idol's Cradle of Love.
