Real bummer, and sorry to hear he had brain cancer. Wes Craven was one of those filmmakers whose creations indirectly altered my life course by scaring the shit out of me when I was a young kid and thus showing me the impact of cinema and art, starting a lifelong obsession. I'm glad to have had the pleasure of thanking him in person.

Like a lot of people have been saying, I had no clue he was sick, so this comes as a huge shock. Craven was always a very hit or miss kind of director. But when he hit, they were home runs. RIP

I'm shocked. I also had no idea he was ill. Freddy Krueger and the "Nightmare" films were always my favorite of the 3 big series and the "Scream" series rejuvenated my love of horror after a lull in the early-mid 90s. I even have a soft spot for "Summer of Fear," his TV movie with Linda Blair. He was such an influence on the horror films I love. I hope he's out of any kind of suffering. RIP.

Shocking. His films were all over my childhood and then mid 20s when I caught back up with his work.

    So sad to hear this.

In the last few years, I feel like I've developed a new appreciation for several of his films - Deadly Blessing, The People Under the Stairs, Serpent and the Rainbow. I'm looking forward to revisiting Shocker, when it's released next week. So he was a director that was definitely at the forefront of my recent viewing. Several of his films and characters where iconic...and so was he. An unexpected loss. R.I.P.

I take it he never let it be known that he was ill? My mind is racing in my head at the moment over and over. This is the end of an era folks this horrible news. We just lost a legend and this really sucks very sad. This is a huge loss and a massive blow to the horror community no doubt. I been thinking as of late if we would get another Scream sequel. At this point I guess that it was time for him to bow one last time. Mr Craven is one of the main influence reasons I am a horror fan today. 100 years from now everybody will still echo your name Wes Craven. Your legacy will never die safe journey rest in eternal peace. Thank you Mr Craven not for your films alone but for being an amazing person also.

WOW, I never knew he had cancer either. I guess it was understandably a private matter that he didn't want made public though. This does just out of nowhere it seems like. :( :( :(

He was definitely one of the greatest talents and innovators of the horror genre of the last 50 years. He'll be missed, but his extensive legacy will surely live on and endure.

Very saddened hearing this news. I haven't watched the NOES movies in about 10 years and I might have to run through them in October. I remember being allowed to skip school one Halloween and renting a bunch of tapes with People Under the Stairs being a first time watch that day and for whatever reason, I remember looking at the box art and reading the cover vividly like I can almost see myself doing it to this day.
