I definitely can't say that Craven is a hack; he may not be the best horror director out there, but he's made more than his fair share of very enjoyable films...which is alot more than I can say for Carpenter, who hasn't made anything even remotely decent since 1994 with In the Mouth of Madness.

I don't know about the rest of you guys, but Scream 4 looks like fun. Although Wes has directed some terrible films, most of those he wrote himself. He's a solid director, the problem is that he needs to pick better scripts.

I'll see it. I loved the original and kind of feel that all the hate it spawned has more to do with all the copycats. But from where I sit, we all owe SCREAM an enormous debt of gratitude. Horror was relegated to crapy direct-to-video status in 1996 and SCREAM made horror saleable on the big screen again.

    As for Craven:

    2010 My Soul to Take
    2005 Red Eye
    2005 Cursed
    1995 Vampire in Brooklyn
    1989 Shocker
1988 The Serpent and the Rainbow
    1986 Deadly Friend
1985 The Hills Have Eyes Part II
    1985 Chiller (Horrendous!)
    1984 Invitation to Hell
    1982 Swamp Thing

That's a lot of cheese and in some instances supreme failures. I forgive him all of this for Nightmare on Elm Street, Hills Have Eyes and Scream, though.

And I actually think he is a pretty good writer.

Not interested. I don't think Craven has really ever impressed me. ANOES was completely ruined by the ending. If you don't have the good sense to edit that out then I deprive you of the kudos you deserved for the Tina's bodybag being dragged down the hall. I know the context TLHOTL was made in, but it still doesn't rate above a curiosity to me. I guess we can thank Scream for giving us I Know What You Did Last Summer and Urban Legends. Thanks, dude.

Maybe I am a sourpuss because I saw My Soul to Take at the drive-in on Friday and spent most of the time watching Jackass 3.

Are you serious? Please tell me that I'm not catching the satire or sarcasm or irony or whatever of that line.

Nev looks good--whatever happened to her? Courtney Cox looks like she visited Meg Ryan's plastic surgeon but escaped his clutches before he did too much damage.

There goes Matt, shooting off his mouth again. :D
Apparently his timeline is missing New Nightmare & Scream. Pretty sure those arrived post 1984.

Um... that ending wasn't Craven's idea. Bob Shea basically forced it into the film.

I liked Scream a lot (not so much the two sequels), and part 4 looks interesting. But am I the only one who thought New Nightmare was abysmal? It started good, but after about the halfway point I was groaning in disappointment at every stupid plot turn. And the ending was just pathetic.

Well we should call Ridley Scott, Terry Gilliam, etc. all that too because this happens quite a bit, even when a director supposedly (or contractually) has "final cut"...

Yeah, but that is probably considered Craven's masterpiece. If he couldn't even get that right... Gilliam has plenty to hang his hat on, so does Scott.

Just curious what Ridley Scott had studio trouble with? I don't know if I know that story.

It's amazing how UNDISTINGUISHED this trailer looks compared to its imitators. Cue that final fright with the "swoosh" sound.

How could he get it right when the Producer would not allow any other ending than the one that it ends with?? Craven sold the rights to Bob Shaye just so he could make the movie because no one in Hollywood would touch the script except for Disney who wanted to turn it into a Watcher in the Woods like supernatural thriller. When it came to the ending, Bob Shaye had final say because he was the producer and then went on to produce the crappy sequels since he owned the rights.

Craven also had a hard time getting work in Hollywood because of his earlier films that many in the industry found offensive. He also had the MPAA on his back.

Yeah, he's made a lot of crap but like others have said - I will always see him in the positive light for the good films he did make that I enjoy immensely. Like any other director, I focus on the films I did like not the ones that I didn't.

Blade Runner - nothing traumatic but he didn't have final say over most of the "cuts" of the film out there.
