Pack your bags -- Scream Factory have booked your cabin at Robert Hiltzik's SLEEPAWAY CAMP (1983)! Summer's not going well for Angela. Shipped off for a stint at Camp Arawak, she's constantly being bullied by her bitchy bunkmates, ignored by careless counselors, and practically molested by a pervy prep cook. As written in The '80s Horror Handbook, her tormentors are naturally picked off by an unseen assailant, who utilizes weapons like an angry beehive and a juiced-up curling iron. Could it have something to do with Angela's traumatic boating accident eight years prior? I'm not telling, but I guarantee the answer will knock you off the couch. Definitely one of the sleazier slashers out there, the whole flick gives off an unhealthy vibe, probably due to its use of real, live, young kids in place of poorly-pretending 30-somethings and its hilariously psychosexual revelations late in the game. One of a kind, and one of the best.

The earlier Anchor Bay DVD was missing a few seconds here and there, but Shout Factory are promising the whole shebang for its blu debut. Designated a "Collector's Edition" by the company, we can also expect a typically heavy slate of supplements. Anything else "simply would not do..."

Blu-Ray / DVD Combo Preorder (5/27/14) now live -- direct link at Cinema Arcana's Upcoming Releases list!

I'm hyped about Evilspeak. Sure it's a low budget Carrie rip off, but the gore is great in the unrated cut. I have good memories of seeing it a couple of times in my local theater on it's initial run. Evilspeak and Sleepaway Camp are easy buys for me.

Kicking off a series of collaborations with Code Red, Scream Factory conjure up Eric Weston's EVILSPEAK (1981) on Blu-Ray! The inimitable Clint Howard stars as awkward orphan Stanley Coopersmith, enrolled into military school as a charity case after the death of his parents. Continuously harassed by the staff and mercilessly tormented by classmates for his lack of soccer prowess (they call him "Cooperdick," towel-whip his bare ass and break his catapult, amongst other offenses), he retaliates the way any set upon kid would: summon the Devil with the aid of an authentic '80s Apple computer. From then on it's Satanic pig attacks, supernatural spine cracking, and the sight of a floating, crazy-haired Clint cleaving heads with a medieval battle sword. It's just your typical coming-of-age story.

Censored of all its best bits for an "R" rating in the States, the film gained its first uncut release here in 2004 from Anchor Bay. However, the elements weren't in the greatest shape and some of the more splattery moments had to be inserted from lesser sources (including a porcine-induced intestine pull that was lifted direct from my French-Canadian VHS -- a prerecord I never got back, for the record). Cut to August 2013, and Code Red reissued the film on self-distributed DVD, striking a fresh HD transfer from a rediscovered uncut interpositive and supplementing it with a new commentary track and cast interviews. While final specs haven't been announced, Shout Factory said they'd be porting over the existing extras, as well as potentially adding new ones. (Hopefully they'll dig up the extended dialogue sections from the UK VHS release and include them in a Deleted Scenes gallery -- it'd be nice to finally dump my import disc!)

Blu-Ray Preorder (5/13/14) now live at Amazon -- direct link available at the Cinema Arcana upcoming releases list:

So glad to hear about Evilspeak... and glad I didn't shell out money for Code Red's release. I'd support Shout over Bill any day.

What was so great about it? It had Cropsey puking out a river of blood for fucks sake.

It made the film look a silly B-movie. It was ASS.
