Don't bury that kid just yet -- Shout Factory finally give Stan Winston's PUMPKINHEAD (1988) an HD upgrade! When podunk storekeep Ed Harley returns home from a grocery delivery, he finds his son got kamikazeed by a dirtbike-ridin' city douche. Irrational with revenge, he turns to the local swamp witch, who instructs how to call the demon necessary to quash the culpable campers. The formidable beast sets out on its single-minded mission; however, its summoner begins to feel some guilt, himself... An atmospheric, rural rumination on blind vengeance and its inevitable consequences, PUMPKINHEAD stands out from its late-'80s kin by offering a little more heart than expected for something that's essentially just a teenkill flick with a stunningly-designed monstrosity at its center. The title creature is a true sight to behold; it's no wonder the film has become a fan favorite since its release and even spawned a handful of slapdash sequels. Designated a Scream Factory "Collector's Edition," it's expected to be a loaded release, though supplements have yet to be announced. (Being an MGM license, I imagine they'll at least include the prior DVD's supplements, including an excellent hour-long making-of including interviews with most of the make-up crew and cast members, plus a commentary track, behind-the-scenes footage, and more!) "Nothin' can call it off..."

Blu-Ray Preorder (9/9/14) : now live at Amazon. Direct links available at my sites.

All the DVD covers for this movie have been on the sucky side. That BR cover is gorgeous!!

The old VHS cover will always be nostalgic though.

I've only watched my MGM special edition DVD once since I bought it 6 or so years ago.

I concur. As someone who has, in general, hated Scream Factory's DIY art for their releases, this one is amazingly good.

I'll definitely be picking this one up. Haven't seen it in 20 years or so, but it struck me like Prom Night on first viewing. Monster movie, sure, but there's a relateable human story at the core, which is pretty rare in horror story telling.

Watched my old collectors edition dvd last night and really enjoyed it. I'd forgotten how cool this movie is.

Looks like it's the same master on the blu judging by those pics. It looks better but not a great deal so. Would have been really cool if this got a new 2k or even 4k scan.

Honestly I really wanted to like this movie. Scream Factory went all out, it has a ton of features, the video quality is great, the effects were great, but I found the movie really dull. I couldn't get into it.

I had the same experience, odd because it has all the elements I usually love about the genre.
