Excellent score, tongue-in-cheek humor and classy performances, Dee Wallace and that Terry character steal the film, and that scene in DR. Quist's office always creeps me out! 25.10.2011 Onibaba (1965) *** Intense, sexually charged, drum-driven Japanese horror. I like this film more every time that I watch it, and that damn mask is scary as hell. 26.10.2011 Night Of The Living Dead (1968)*** Uh... been watching this film since I can remember, so I dindn't pay much attention this time around. Love the opening cemetery scene, so classic. 27.10.2011 Return Of The Living Dead (1985)<3 One of my top-5 films ever! Linnea Quiggley in her most charming character, great dumb attitude filled one-liners ("I like it, it's a statement."), zombies, gore, punk-psychobilly tunes, electro80s spooky film score and even Clu Galager turns out to be liekeable (being the most hateable human being in Elm Street 2 only proves what a great actor he is). 28.10.2011 Halloween 4 (1988)*** Orphan Jamie always brings tears to the eyes. Nice built, suspense ladden quasi remake of the first one, only this time a child actor is in the lead. Despite the horrid hairstyles the film is quite enjoyable, and it all leads to that awesome roof sequence. 29.10.2011 Halloween 5 (1989)***Always have had a soft spot for part 5s. If orphan Jamie brings tears to the eyes, mute Jamie is sure to break everyones' hearts. There's some strangeness about it that I find addictive. On the one hand it seems like a zero budget amateur slasher with a plot that makes no logical sense whatsoever but then it has all those scary scenes and deep emotional moments. The highlight of the film is the Tina-Jamie relationship, with all the dilemmas of being young and wanting to party and do grown up stuff, and at the same time wanting to take care of a child. There's also the car chase, which it's so vicious it seems almost illegal, and the mexican-mafia-style ending always gives me the creeps! Danielle Harris has this natural charm, but Wendy Kaplan is waaay underrated, the two carry the film greatly. 30.10.2011 It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown (1966) <3 Another all-time favorite. Try to watch it every 31st but it seemed nice on Sunday, after all the booze and all the partying, hehe.

On to November!
Mystery Science Theater 3000: "Manos" The Hands of Fate (1966) :joshua::joshua::joshua::joshua::joshua: One of the genius things about this riffing is the theme of the place being a hotel. One of the more absurd concepts of this is from the movie itself with Torgo becoming the bell hop. If a stranger knocked on your door, demanded to let their family stay overnight and ordered you to bring in their luggage to a ready room what would you say? I'd say "FUCK OFF!" Torgo just goes along with it! I was also surprised that there are still a few riffs I've haven't remembered. After watching this for over a decade year after year there's still some treats in store. Rifftrax: Plan 9 From Outer Space (1959) :troll::joshua::joshua::joshua::joshua: Originally I was disappointed in this riffing but I got much more into it this time. I think the decades of expectation behind "when are they going to do Plan 9" built up too much in my mind. It's no "Manos" but's it's still one of the best. Monsters Crash the Pajama Party (1965) :troll::joshua::joshua::joshua::joshua: Not "bad in a good" but "good in a bad way." There's something to be said that "for 1965 this was good enough" and that taps into the same logic which makes Christmas what it is for me. This is more about going back to the roots of a spook show and reliving American history. I enjoy the quaintness of this and watching this is like going rustic for the fun of it not the practicality of it. Frankenstein (1910) :troll::troll::troll::joshua::joshua: It occurs to me how almost experimental this really is with its story. Today you could never get away with a lot of the more surreal moments in this. Yet it was immensely popular upon its release. It was also very graphic with the creation of The Monster. Like watching butchering videos in reverse and again very few can stomach such scenes even today in horror. Dracula (1931) :troll::troll::troll::troll::joshua: There's been a resurgence in this movie lately with fan edits that return this back to its original cut as scripted. After watching a few and trying to improve it with my own cut I set out to watch it this evening mindful of how the original edit works. The theatrical cut spaces things out a little better I think. There is some redundancy in the script version with a scene happening, and then the next scene character describe the previous scene again. The theatrical cut breaks this up as best it can (there's still one back-to-back scene but it fits nowhere else) and short of re-shoots fixes it as best it can. Frankenstein (1931) :troll::troll::troll::troll::troll: I noticed that structurally Frankenstein reverses the trend of Dracula, instead characters talk about what they're going to do and then the next scene shows them doing it. While at face value this is repetitive, Frankenstein has the character's plans falling apart as the very next thing. A very brief example of this is when the fiancee and grandfather visit Frankenstein at the lab. The professor makes a point to leave them together alone, but the instant those three are alone Frankenstein collapses and the professor is called up to help. The fact that screen time was devoted to something that seconds later is reverse annoyed me as wasting time but I've come to appreciate its subtle constancy in this regard. Unfortunately I was resting my eyes during parts of Frankenstein and had to relent on watching The Bride of Frankenstein to finish off the night.
saw this at The Revue Cinema with some friends this evening. One friend had never seen it before, and his reaction to the shark vs. zombie scene was priceless. The eye/splinter scene also got a huge response from the crowd. Unfortunate that it was digital, as an actual vintage print would have been so much more appropriate (i saw city of the living dead on a beat to hell print with burned in german subtitles and it was one of the best theater experiences ever), but seeing it with a large audience, and blown up to that size was still a huge treat.
October 31st 65) Troll 2: Some movies live around all the hype and fail to deliver. Troll 2 manages to meet the challenge. Truly an odd, ridiculous, over the ride from start to finish. Now whether it deserves the title "Best Worst Movie" is subjective, it has enough insanity to keep you interested. Definitely one film that needs to be seen to be believed. (7/10) 66) Atrocious: A fast paced, entertaining piece of cinema-verite. The run time could of been stretched a little be to give it more depth, but I had to much fun with it to complain. (7.5/10) 67) Mad Monster Party: quirky and a bit out dated, but entertaining as far as kid movies go. Boris Karloff is charming as always, and the animation and music is what you would expect from a 1960's movie. (7/10)
October 31st Horror Movie Marathon: 1)Burial Ground 2)The Beast Within 3)Girls Nite Out 4)The Unseen 5)Splatter University 6)Ginger Snaps 7)Dawn of the Dead 8)Hell Night 9)The Dorm That Dripped Blood 10)Scream 4 +bonus Halloween feature: 11)Halloween H20 This time around I thought of some killer-in-campus theme, with some gore classics I had yet to see. Most are first time viewings, except for Scream 4, which I've been watching like once every two weeks, and Ginger Snaps and H20, which I hadn't checked in like 8 years. Guess I'll be finished by 4am.

10/31 #49 Jurassic Park III (2001) BD This is actually a pretty good sequel, though missing the Spielberg "magic" but still entertaining enough. 4/5 Darkman (1990) BD Not really horror but it has all the typical wild Raimi ingredients. Over-the-top greatness. 4.5/5 Candyman (1992) BD Looking and sounding pretty good on Blu-ray. Todd's voice is booming and Madsen's eyes are more clearer and sharper than ever. 5/5 Halloween (1978) BD Had to flip a coin. It was either this or Season of the Witch. 5/5
