Mine arrives in the mail tomorrow! I must say that I really respect Freddie Francis as a visual stylist. His films are always interesting to look at, and this film is a wonderful example of a director who knows how to think through images. Anyway, that his guy could direct stylish little horror films and also shoot "The Straight Story" (the great Lynch film that is always overlooked on these boards) is indicative of his visual range.

Excellent! Mine should be arriving either today or tomorrow. I'm so glad this is finally on DVD, I feel like doing a happy dance!

I watched my copy earlier, and the transfer is pretty damn good thankfully. Of course, the douchebags once again have included trailers for other films, but not the one for the film that the DVD is actually for. Still, at least the transfer is great, and I'm glad to finally have this, as I've waited a long time.

Ouch, I really want this, but Best Buy was $20 for it, that's a bit much really.

Oh well, I guess I'll just grab it online.

I picked it up as well. for 20 bucks it should have included the trailer and a card or booklet i would think. Really though, im happy just to have this on dvd with a fine transfer. I love this movie.
Now if the Skull could get a dvd ide be a dancing in the streets.

Found the new DVD to rent last night. Hadn't seen this one in many years.

It's almost funny now how much that finger with the flesh looks like a dildo!

The film is about patriarchal control in Victorian England: not only with respect to the family (wife and daughter), but also with respect to science (animals and the mentally ill). The "dildo" (mentioned above) is quite appropriate in this sense. I think the film is quite brilliant actually, and it can be read in many ways. The ambiguity around the film's narrative subjectivity is really interesting - there are layers of different perspectives infused into the narrative. I love that about this film. And the wonderful EC comics-type ending make this an especially intertesting film for horror fans. I haven't seen all of Francis' flms, but this is among his very best!

The bare-bones disc looks good: solid colors, nice transfer!

Anyone know where I can pick this up for a decent price? It's pretty expensive around here.

  17. Can't wait to see this again. It's been a long time since I last watched it and, as has already been said - Cushing + Lee = bliss!

I've been looking forward to seeing this movie for a long time. Lee, Cushing, and the mysterious flesh. A definite good time.
