The Fog for me, The Mist was mediocre at best.
Oh, The Mist. The Fog is vastly overrated.
The Fog, definitely.
I think The Mist should be paired against, say...Attack of the Crab Monsters? There were some scenes almost as thrilling as the bug attacks in Food of the Gods.
I'll take the ghost story any day over the critter feature.
the fog but just barely
The Mist. I like The Fog, but even John Carpenter says it's one of his lesser movies.
The Slime People (1963) has a very similar menace as The Mist does. Infact I'd almost rather have The Slime People's plot with The Mist's execution.
While the Mist ended up being much better than I anticipated, I have to give my vote to the Fog. The Fog has that horror/creepiness that I love, but the Mist is more like scary version of Jurassic Park.
Both films are terrific, but I too would have to go with The Fog. The soundtrack stands out and the film has held up suprisingly well over the years. Just need to wipe out all existing copies of the remake and try to forget that it ever existed.
I voted The Fog. I'm 41 and remember seeing it at the cinema on it's first run. Scared the crappers out of me. I also love The Mist, have seen it 4 times now. That Mrs Carmody makes me wanna watch it again on a cheap ass TV just so I can throw a brick at her. But, I've seen The Fog now more times that I could count. It's just one of Carpenters classics I have to watch every 6 months or so along with Escape From New York. Oh, and Adrienne's great rack may have something to do with it also.
I'm a big Carpenter guy. And even though The Fog isn't one of my favorite Carpenter flicks, this isn't a tough call for me. I must be the only one out there who really didn't like The Mist. It reminds me a little of later Romero flicks where melodrama and preachiness began to replace subtle satire.
The Mist was a great movie, but it's hard to overcome nostalgia. The Fog is way too near and dear to my heart for me to ever consider voting against it. But even without the nostalgia factor the soundtrack for The Fog kicks The Mist's tail.
O.K., I let it set in for 2 years. During that time I've watched the Mist 3 times and the Fog none. I still cheer when Mrs. Carmody gets shot everytime, it's a great film and gets my belated vote.
I have all kinds of love for The Fog as well, but the Mist, besides the CGI, is just a great flick.
The Fog all the way.
I do have alot of respect for The Mist though, especially the ending.
edit: Oops, accidentally voted for The Mist.
The Mist by a mile. The Fog was ok but not one of my favorites.
The Mist has one of my favorite endings of all horror movies. I didnt read any spoilers before I saw it, and I DID NOT see that shit coming! I am a big SK fan and I like damn near all the movies based on his works, no matter how far from the true source they might be. And The Mist was just about the best movie "based" on one of his books or short stories. Everything but the ending, and the movie may well have improved on SKs ending.
But if I am stuck on a deserted island with one or the other, The Fog wins by a mile. Creepy, dark, great sound effects. Not even close.
The Fog for me, Not only one of Carpenter's best but one of my top ten favourites, Classic.
The Fog is infinitely better than Halloween! It's so atmospheric!
Love The Mist but The Fog (1980) wins!
They're both good but my vote goes to The Mist. The lack of a happy ending makes the movie that much better.
Both great flicks, but I have to go with The Mist.
No other recent film does such a great job of creating atmopshere and mystery while roping the viewer in. Even on subsequent viewings, the film is undeniably atmospheric.
One of my favorite horror films of the past decade.
