I think Buddy Cooper and Crazy Bill should do lunch at this point.
The Mutilator was the only thing Buddy Copper ever did, so I can see him being somewhat stingy with the rights. I don't know all the particulars, so I'm just speculating but he either is asking too much $$$ or is treating this like his virgin daughter and doesn't want anyone to touch it......
If I remember correctly, didn't Code Red say they had the rights for 10 years?
I'd imagine the 10 years would be up anytime now, assuming they aren't done already. Shame it was basically sat on for a decade.
Anyway, hope it works out this time, but like everyone else, I'll believe it when I see it.
The issue, as I recall it, was that originally Buddy supplied a print which was the R rated version. Bill was told that there was no uncut version on film, just a 3/4" master. Flash forward about a year later, while Buddy was looking through some materials in the garage he - surprise - finds the uncut version. Instead of being glad, Bill gets pissed because he's already paid to have the rated version scanned and is now working on restoring it.
From what I heard Bill planned on releasing the quarter inch master version right before his rights would expire to saturate the market for any future releases. Of course that turned into a legal battle between the two - again this is all hear say but sounds pretty much like this is how shit went down - which prevented Bill from doing anything with it and perhaps now the rights have reverted back to Buddy. Or he gave Bill back his money and now he's shopping it around again.
The world may never know.
thats not what happened, but I wont waste my time getting into details. I will just say no unrated print was ever offered, just a 1/2 inch unrated tape was offered as a replacement for a battered R rated print. Maybe he finally found an unrated print, who knows.
I don't pretend to know everything, that is just what I was told from a third party who is friends with Buddy. So hopefully no offense was put towards yourself.
I know there's a video online of Buddy going through his garage and showing all the prints and elements he has. He doesn't specifically say "Here's the unrated version" but I do believe he does make mention of the footage that was excised by the MPAA being there.
It's actually in this video, around 5:25ish he starts looking at the film elements and such; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h39s2wotv3g
Let's just get this shit on the road. It's been friggin' dragged out for too long already.
From what I gather the original negatives are in shit condition. Unless someone has some pristine uncut negative it's game over.
Someone asked 88films about the movie, on facebook, and got this answer:
"88 Films: We enquired about The Mutilator and it's a no go. Sorry."
This will never come out. So hold on to your VHS, Laserdiscs, and Bootleg DVD´s
So sad. I remember it being a pretty decent slasher when I saw it years ago now.
Yeah, the kills are wonderful in this one
Gonna try and track down the laserdisc again.
Still holding on to the unrated German Dragon DVD which looks decent upconverted on my LCD.
Revok has that $12.99 bootleg.
I still have my VHS.
How decent does this look? Was thinking of getting a copy of this off Ebay? I have heard its comparable to VHS quality.
I was looking for it on amazon's German site and couldn't find it--sounds like it OOP?
Almost certainly out of print although the odd copy does turn up on Ebay. Was just wondering if its worth having or if the transfer is as bad as I have heard.
I'm pretty sure they used a vhs master (no tape related drop-outs or tracking issues). The print looks solid and mostly clean. It's not a visual stunner but good enough in my book.
And fullscreen too I take it? Is this cropped or open matte? There are a couple of copies of thr Dragon release on ebay.co.uk.
I have this on beta format which will suffice for now.
Love this movie hate the end credits that fall break song stinks.
