This is to kind of merge all of the Argento topics and things. To talk about the Man, the Myth, and the Legend. Dario Argento himself.

To talk about The films of Argento, news on Argento, trivia on Argento or his films, theories on his films, and other things along that nature.

The thread to end all threads.

To kick things off, I compiled a list of easy and known trivia.

    SOME SPOILERS

In alot of his films he used Daria Nicioldi, his lover. She stars in Deep Red, Phenomena, Opera, Tenebe, and the story for Suspiria actually came from Daria, who when she was young her Grandmother would tell her stories and Suspiria was one of the stories she told. Daria was set to star as the lead, until Argento said he wanted an American.

Deep Red - Daria is A good Character

Opera - Daria is a good character that get's killed in one of the worst ways possible.

Tenebre - Daria is a good character who get's messed up mentally in the end.

Phenomena - Daria is a full out Evil Character.

Some say this Symbolizes the decline of their relationship. From Good to Bad.

He often uses up-closes of the eyes in his films.

When he would shoot the killer with black gloves that would be his own hands. He stopped doing that since Sleepless.

His uses of Color in his films are very memorable and very beautiful, it's kind of become a trademark.

Suspiria and Inferno is Part of a Triolgy called The Three Mothers. He's currently working on the third part. It's a trilogy with three witches, one in Germany, another in New York, and the last in Rome.

Suspira is set in Germany with the Mother of Sighs.

Inferno is set in New York with the Mother of Darkness.

Last One is going to be set in Rome with the Mother of Tears.

In Suspiria and Inferno, Argento uses the same Cab Driver in Both movies intentionally.

You should probably use spoiler tags, some people might not have seen some of the movies mentioned above.

Argento is one of the most heavilly ripped-off directors of recent times.Since many of his films have been hard to see in American theaters, many people don't see that a lot of stuff they watch on screen now was done by him twenty years ago.Sadly, many of those lifting elements from him exhibit no real flair of their own.Argento can be erratic, but when he's gone,we're really gonna have lost a major figure in horror.

That theory would work fine and dandy, but Opera was released after all of those.

I feel that when great director's like Argento go, we than will cry and wish he were alive. But when he's alive they don't really care and he has problems finding money for his next film. Truly sad and depressing. Same thing goes for Godard, look how old he is.

They should make more documentaries, interviews, thoughts, and opinions before they die. Then we won't have that question we'll never know.

Just wanted to say that one of my favorite scores to any horror film is the opening song in Pheonomena.

Also though, I'm not too big on the use of heavy metal songs in some of his films. At times to me it feels rather inappropriate to what is happening on the screen. Count me in though as one of his fans.

I kind of disliked his use of heavy metal to. The one that stood out for me the most was in Opera, but still an orgasm of a film.

Anybody have the 70's tv series that Dario hosted,THE DOOR INTO DARKNESS (I think thats the translation) ? A box set was issued a while back in Europe.Hows' the quality on the set, picture ,sound etc ? I saw one segment years ago,THE DOLL on an old VIDEO SEARCH OF MIAMI tape, though I don't think Dario directed that one.It was...odd.Anyone have any thoughts on the dvd set ?

It's a great selection with mediocre picture quality. But very cool if you're into Argento.Subs are sufficient but sometimes the translation leaves a bit to be desired.Nothing really annoying though.
    There's a review at DVDManiacs.
Great Luigi Cozzi interview as an extra.
    Still available at Xploited

    And there's this thread.

I guess I'm the only person here who LOVES the way that Argento uses heavy metal in his films. I think it works marvelously well in complementing the violent action, although it admittingly works much better in OPERA than it does in PHENOMENA. Still, those death scenes in OPERA coupled with the aggressive music just works so damn well... I love it!

Is Four Flies On Grey Velvet still tied up in red tape over at Paramount? That's supposed to be a good 'un.

agreed. ...the heavy metal kicks ass in the scene where that knife goes through the bottom of that guys chin in opera.it is one of my favorite argento works.

on a side note i watched once upon a time in the west 5 times this week and i'm impressed with his hand in the writting efforts. i think argento could be the one to realize my dream movie--- a spaghetti western with a total storyline based around a supernatural occurances. i wish...

shit, just edited that 5 times. i cant write :(
