I wonder what they'll screw up with this release?

I'm more excited about The Adventures of Ford Fairlane coming out on Blu-ray. But since it's a 20th Century Fox licensed title, I'm sure the idiots at Anchor Bay won't even give us a damn menu on the disc.

I just watched this again on Hulu and although it's no masterpiece this is an underrated movie. Sure there are some typical Peckinpah moments and his usual cynicism is prevalent (Hurt's character is just nasty). But this is not your typical Peckinpah movie as it is quite progressive in its focus on technology and in particular surveillance. The ending is a perfect example of this as it's a trick that you could easily see in a movie coming out today.

Another underseen Peckinpah movie that needs a good release is Cross of Iron which features a great James Coburn performance.

Yes, it's coming to Blu on May 5th... but unless Anchor Bay have changed their tune with their 20th Century Fox licensed releases, you had better hold on to your old DVD, because the chances are good that we won't even get a menu knowing those clowns.

Agreed, a great movie. Coburn once said he felt he probably did his best work in his Peckinpah films. He's great in CROSS.

There's a good UK Blu-ray of Cross of Iron and also a Jap release which I think uses the same transfer.

At least they used an actual HD master this time around.

And unfortunately it's slathered with severe DNR. I watched it earlier, and faces and skin are generally waxy in appearance. There's literally no film grain visible, it's all been smoothed off. It's almost Predator-bad.

Also, the color timing has been dramatically altered. See this comparison with the old DVD.

I don't see why they did this, as they haven't with other 20th Century Fox licenses on Blu-ray. I would have rather had the disc barebones and with a solid transfer.

Anchor Bay strikes out again. Can this studio do anything right anymore? :fuck:

Yeah, it looks really horrible trust me. The edge enhancement they did was bad enough, but paired with the DNR and vastly altered color timing, it's just a disaster. The sad thing is this could have looked great in HD, if treated right by a reputable studio. Hopefully some overseas release comes along with a good transfer.

And the recent bare-bones Adventures of Ford Fairlane (also a 20th Century Fox license) Blu-ray actually looks pretty good, and has no such digital tinkering.

If it's not bare-bones releases now from Anchor Bay, it's DNR'ed junk like this.

The opening two sentences discussing the video quality should be enough to convince anyone:

Too bad. I've never seen this film & won't waste my money on this at any price.

    Definitely, and I LOVE Amazon.

I just submitted a return because I am so utterly disappointed in watching it, and got this message from them immediately:

Now what other retailer would do that? They're awesome! :)

They must have received tons of complaints about it or something I guess. Anchor Bay can eat it!! :fuck:

That's great customer service from Amazon while at the same time a perfect summation of the abysmal quality that is now Anchor Bay.

I'm generally a fan of Amazon but lately have been receiving many orders days late despite being an Amazon Prime member.

They screwed things up on that. I guess if you want to call it a decent job though... they qualify, barely.
