    The Shallows (2016, Jaume Collet-Serra)

This thriller is set a mere 200 yards from shore where surfer Nancy (Blake Lively) is attacked by a great white, with her short journey to safety becoming a contest of wills between her and the shark. This film has been called the best shark movie since Jaws, with the caveat that there has not been many passable shark films since then as well as sharks in films becoming somewhat of a joke with cheap films such as Sharknado etc.

I thought it was ok but probably prefer Open Water (2003) which I thought had better tension. This film is well enough made although cgi animals never really quite work but it could have been worse; however the biggest annoyance was the main character talking her thoughts out loud which is both unrealistic and totally unnecessary. There was nothing she said that you couldn't figure out from what was been shown on camera and a more silent approach would have done the film wonders. Less said about the climax the better but the journey was ok enough for a once through.

    5.5/10

I saw this last night with my girlfriend. Yeah, it was kinda dumb. It was an ok enough time waster I guess, but overall I was pretty underwhelmed. The CGI didn't fully work and things just got way too implausible. I also agree that her talking so much was kinda unnecessary.
