 That's what I thought. Pretty much the reason I have never attempted to chase down a copy. Satan's Blade sells for similarly ridiculous amounts, but try as I might, I cannot find a copy of that one.
Sure sure yeah right yeep yeep ahem whateva floats your boat chompster. Anyway The Sleeper does look like a weak limp dick in between those big box videos. OK bed is calling me back night! :sleepy:
 Whoa, no shit? I didn't realise it was that rare. I do own Satan's Blade on VHS in the original Prism clamshell case...but I'm not selling it.
I do prefer Satan's Blade to The Prey, but I probably wouldn't pay more than $10 for that one either. Maybe $15.
Your NTSC tapes wouldn't sell for anywhere close to what the local market pays for these tapes. The reason Satan's Blade is so collectible is because of the label it was on - Palace Explosive. In much the same way as The Prey is collectible on the Video Classics label. Both were large video distributors in the 80s here in Australia, hence the collectibility. I don't think it's the films themselves, as such, that people collect. Palace Explosive was largely their horror/exploitation label with titles such as The Beyond, Madman, I Spit On Your Grave, Rape Squad (which is really rare!!), The Slayer, The Evictors, Cannibal Apocalypse, etc. I have a lot of these titles myself, but Satan's Blade and The Prey are probably a couple of the rarest in the collector market. Uh, yeah. Hence the reason I clearly mentioned Australia (and your tapes being NTSC). Prom Night aside, I would never pay big money for one of those crappy, cardboard cased NTSC video tapes. I'd be more likely to look for a UK version if it came to that. Besides, the North American collectors would price me out on the NTSC tapes that actually are collectible! But I guess that's the thing, isn't it? For the most part, the VHS market is nearly always a local one. That's certainly been my experience. Thankfully though, I've never had to pay big money for Prom Night tapes, regardless of the format. No, actually, I tell a lie. I was prepared to pay big money for a mint Australian Embassy clamshell (with original case that had been taken out of a shops inventory very early on), but it never came to that. A bit more than I wanted, but not a massive price, although I was quite surprised I wasn't the only bidder, TBH. Despite the death of VHS as a format, the collector market for it is still quite strong here, providing you have the right product to sell. If you thought $150 was high, you should see what preview tapes and distributors brochures sell for - holy crap!!!! Sometimes I trawl ebay just to see how the market is going, and for a good OMG. What? You paid that much, for.... that? Collectors even more rabid than me, apparently.
I finally got around to watching this one - and I enjoyed it. Go in with low expectations- it was filmed in 13 days on a 30,000 budget and some first time actors (including the lead). But it had its moments and was fun - especially check out the Joe Bob Briggs Drive In Total and trailer for Dont Go In The Attic that are in the special features. How old is the Director/Writer/Actor for this one? He looks like he is in college. Not great but not terrible- and I love the dance scene! Also I have not had a chance to view the vhs tape yet- I had read a couple reviews that state what they were trying to pull off with the early 80's look actually looks much better on the vhs tape - not sure if anyone has watched both and can confirm or deny that statement.
Why the latent aggression and frustration whenever something of a remotely sexual nature appears on this site? On another note, mentioning porn and clamshell in the same thread seems suspiciously perverted in an oddball way.
Well, there's 85 minutes and 30 seconds of my life I wont get back. What a pile of crap. This looks like it had about 10% of Black Devil Doll From Hell's budget. The kills lack any imagination whatsoever. Hardly any gore, and the stuff that is shown is so poorly done it should have not been shown. The acting was woeful. Predictable from start to end as well. Now, for the positives. There was a disco scene that had me laughing pretty hard for a few minutes, although I'm not sure if it was intended to be funny. And Joe Bob Briggs has nice little cameo. Avoid this pile unless you must see it.
Oh dear! That scene is one of the most poorly orchestrated I have ever seen: "We're at a disco - quick, everyone dance awkwardly in sync for the camera!" If it was intended to be funny, it's funny at the expense of the whole movie as a whole.
Just watched this finally, and definitely enjoyed it for what it was. Low budget, with some obvious filler in the first half, but some fun death scenes without CGI - I applaud that effort. It kinda reminded me of a cross between Black Christmas and Slumber Party Massacre. If this came out in 1981 I bet it would get a lot more praise around here.
That's the thing. This film could NEVER have come out in 1981. That's where people find fault. But I did enjoy it, and 30,000 went a long way I think.
Now available on blu-ray in Germany under the title College Killer with this totally hilarious cover art:
The German release is cut by almost 2 minutes. There's an Austrian blu-ray release that's Uncut though.
