Very good point! I am thinking it is with the actual screening now. Numerous of us were confused as to why it was so dark considering these guys are awesome with fx. Can't wait to see it at home to give it a better chance.

I saw it this weekend at a theater in Phoenix, and didn't have any issues with the lighting, so I would agree that the issue was likely with the projection at the screening.

As for the movie, it hit the spot. The plot is muddled and the ending doesn't make much sense, but overall I enjoyed it. The practical effects were used well, and were properly nightmarish.

Saw this last night and didn't mind it. From an effects standpoint it was pretty impressive but the story was lacking imo. The effects are definitely the star here but it felt like they were often obscured by a strobe light effect they insisted on using. They also don't really focus on the effects like The Thing (for example) does. That was a little disappointing as I was hoping they would want to show off their crazy effects work as opposed to obscuring it.
I really liked the cult aspect of the film as it was done well and felt genuinely tense at times. I also noticed some strong similarities to Hellraiser towards the end such as a scene with closing walls and a monster running down them, just like the Engineer.

The cool practical effects and the 80's throwback feel aside, I can't remember the last time I was this frustrated watching a horror film. It starts out strong with the premise, but this thing goes completely off the rails in the final act. Don't get me wrong, Im all about horror films that leave an element of the unknown in the story telling, but the storyline is some muddled and bogged down by too many subplots and not enough focus on the over arcing story about this cult. If anything the cult aspect of the film is flushed completely down the toilet to instead pay attention to a bunch of different subplots that don't connect together at all, which turned out for worse by the time it was over. I'll be the odd man out here and say skip this one.

Wow.......kinda surprised by everyones thoughts on this flick. I'm pretty happy I didn't end up driving down to Houston to catch it last week. I'll wait to catch it streaming/vod later this year or next.

It's definitely worth seeing in the theater, in my opinion.

    I thought it was great.
I have kept my expectations in check, since I got badly burned on that fucking "Harbinger Down" shit.
Compared to that turd, this one actually delivered on the promises, and also had WAY better practical FX.

The tone of the movie, felt a bit like old-school Carpenter.
I also got a nice Lovecraft vibe from the movie, and some of the creature designs.

One scene kinda reminded my of Fulci's "The Beyond".
The ending when our main characters ended up on the other side

    I highly recommend it.

It was released on DVD over here in Sweden, but sadly no Blu-Ray, for some stupid reason.
But I will import the UK disc.

Watched my digital copy and yes, I actually got to see the fx. Dear god, what a difference. The fx were as awesome as I expected. So pissed that the picture at the screening I attended was so dark as the fx make the movie. Glad the rest of you are digging it too.

Took a little while, but The Void finally made it to our local Alamo Drafthouse this weekend. It's only been getting two screenings per day. We went to the Sunday morning show. Certainly not for everyone, but I really enjoyed it. My wife not as much, but still thumbs up from her. The reference points of Carpenter, Barker, & Fulci are all valid. Very haunting atmosphere & a mood of dread throughout. The cult members were effectively creepy & would probably make a memorable Halloween costume (as long as you could see out of it). Cool to have some old school actors like Kenneth Welsh (Windom Earle from Twin Peaks) and Art Hindle (The Brood, Invasion of the Body Snatchers '78, Black Christmas). Despite some online warnings from others, I am keeping my order for the UK Blu-ray. Still backordered at Amazon UK, but happy to wait at the price I locked in several weeks ago.
