October 2 - NEW YORK RIPPER. What's funny is I visited the new cafe my friend is opening and I was just watching my portable player while they were all finishing up cleaning and all the guys dropped everything to watch the "Doll Theater" segment.

THE BLACK CAT - Fulci favorite.

    just finished The Strangeness

while on paper this seemed to me to be an endless stream of boring scenes of people wandering around in the dark, it turned out to be exactly that, only that it wasn't boring, but one of the best 'hidden gems' i've seen in a while

the deserted mine becomes a character in itself, the cheap Carpenter-esque synth score is very appropiate and the whole movie is an excellent mood piece, with some very sparse, but superbly realized stop-motion monster effects and in some scenes, you see that the director understands what's needed to make horror movies creepy and scary

great DVD by Code Red btw

The Boogens - Love this movie. It used to be shown on HBO all the time when I was young. Creepy and fun! Needs a real DVD release. Decided to transfer my old VHS.

This one was surprisingly pretty solid. It seems like your standard torture/strange folks victimizing unsuspecting travelers movie for quite a while, but eventually becomes something more that is quite interesting.....the ending is pretty bleak, that's for sure-and not in the "good grief, the killer's still alive!" mode, either.
Sadly, all I had time for today as I also watched some college football.

  15. Today, October 3rd, 2009:

Currently watching my DVD of the fine sci-fi/comedy Night of the Comet (1984) up-converted on my Blu-Ray theater system, and very much enjoying it! It's always been a very underrated B+ movie for me, if I were to score it as we all do here that the reviews do on HorrorDVDs.com, and it's real fun. Canadian-born & bred hottie Catherine Mary Stewart (Weekend at Bernie's, The Apple, and Nick Castle's The Last Starfighter) never looked hotter. And yes, dammit, I still love her hair. ;)

Actually still a quite fun, underrated title. Really suggested.

Later on I'll be continuing on with my Exploitation/Slasher film annual angle with a viewing of the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974) on Blu-Ray.

Friday the 13th Part 2 (Blu-Ray) - Perhaps my most anticipated Blu. My favorite of the series for many great reasons - Jason is introduced, it's gory and creepy as all hell.

House by The Cemetery (EC Release) - Talk about a great movie to watch during the Halloween season. Gory and Creepy. Would love to see this get some Blu treatment!

Hits all the right spooky notes with Warner Oland making an excellent villain. The slight comedy doesn't bring things to a screeching halt and sometimes proves to be quite wicked. The grand finale murder scheme is rather ingenious.

Different take on the outcast scientist cliche, with an ending that makes you second guess yourself. The acting is also well above standard for the supporting cast and the platinum blond lead gets many a close up.

Hope and Goddard at the top of their game, with Willie Best nailing the scared black act. The old cliches are done so magnificently you hardly can tell. Plot also keeps you guessing while keeping a brisk pace.
