thats an interesting point ...i am unable to decide myself wether a giallo has to be italian to be a giallo...does anyone have a take on this??????
giallos is an unusual beast in that..[casting aside the bava template]it is usually made up of varying measures of....violence[sometimes creeping into gore].......sex[sometimes swaying into sleeze]...style....plot and charactorization
now...i think a viewer likes a particular measure of those ingredients ....for instance i like a lot of violence and style and are indifferent to sex or plot so i love fulci giallos......but another person might like plot , interesting charactors and a lot of style but not necessarily on screen sex and violence so he will probably have bava on top of his list..........argento has just about all of the ingrediants so he will appeal to just asbout everyone.....thats my take on it anyway.......

I suppose since I'm looking through this thread anyways I can post my report card for the giallos I've seen. Some of these might not classify as typical gialli, but whatever:

    Cat 'O Nine Tails - 7.5/10
    Deep Red - 9/10
    Tenebrae - 10/10
    Opera - 8.5/10
    Trauma - 8.5/10
    The Stendhal Syndrome - 9.5/10
    The Card Player - 7.5/10
    Stagefright - 8/10
The Case Of The Scorpion's Tail - 8.5/10
The Strange Vice Of Mrs. Wardh - 8.5/10
Your Vice Is A Locked Room And Only I Have The Key - 8.5/10
All The Colors Of The Dark - 9.5/10
    Torso - 9/10
Lisa And The Devil - 9/10
    Don't Torture A Duckling - 9/10
    New York Ripper - 10/10
Buio Omega: Beyond The Darkness - 9/10
    A Bell From Hell - 8/10
    The Bloodstained Shadow - 9.5/10

I obviously haven't seen too many of the films in this genre, but definitely plan on doing so in the future since I enjoy them immensely. Everything from the sleaziest moments in New York Ripper to the classiest shots from Bava. The beauties, the blood, and the bone-tingling scores that you can feel delving deeper into your skin with each forthcoming beat. The cinematography is consistently top-notch rivalling the likes of Hitchcock at times and throwing it into experimental exploitation at times. These films force me to have surrealistic nightmares causing me many a nights fulfilled with fanboy wet-dreams.

Great choices (haven't seen LatD),but "Cat" only 7.5?That one's so underrated!Or perhaps overrated by me?:D It's a great movie but judgeing by the list you're more into sleaze and gore and frankly in "Cat" there's none of that.Instead you get an intriguing story, great setpieces,a crazy free-Jazz Morricone score,top-notch Argento camerawork, good acting and......atmosphere!:D

I only made it through Cat once and it was one of my first Argento films and gialli in general. I'm sure if I viewed it again now, my opinion would change. I sold the shitty edited version I watched 'cuz it was a $5 disc I found at the grocery store nonetheless and was in one of those clear slim cases. I'll be getting the AB release with their Man's Worst Friends fright-pack so hopefully I'll have opened up to it then.

I'm a few months late for this thread, but here are my top five gialli so far:

    1. Don't Torture a Duckling
    2. The Bird with the Crystal Plumage
    3. Deep Red
    4. Who Saw Her Die?
    5. Seven Blood-Stained Orchids

  7. 4Gotten1

    1. Blood and Black Lace
    2. What have you done to Solange?
    3. Tenebre
    4. Cat O' Nine Tails / The Strange Vice of Mrs. Wardh
    5. The Killer Must Kill Again

This is too difficult. Therefore not wanting to delete Cat O' Nine Tails -- I did a tie with Strange Vice, as I feel Sergio Martino deserves to be up there. Bava is #1 in my book, the Godfather of the Giallo, and in my top ten would also be Twitch of the Death Nerve and Hatchet for the Honeymoon, which I feel is underrated.

    Adding to my report card....

    Case Of The Scorpion's Tail - 8.5/10
The Strange Vice Of Mrs. Wardh - 8.5/10
Your Vice Is A Locked Room And Only I Have The Key - 8.5/10
    A Bell From Hell - 8/10

I just got The Giallo Collection and Deep Red as well, so I will probably add those to the list soon as well.

    Ok, guys.

    What's your most violent giallo.

I bet argento's films will dominate.

I just added Deep Red and The Bloodstained Shadow to my previous report card thingmajig. I actually enjoyed The Bloodstained Shadow a lot (9.5/10) even more than Deep Red (9/10). I think Deep Red will need to get another viewing soon since I had a friend from out of town over when I was watching it, so it didn't get my full attention.

Black Belly has some blood spilled but not as much as say in an Argento Giallo.
And what Raro disc are you talking about?I think you're mistaken it with the other Cavara Giallo E Tanta Paura. The disc I have is from RHV (Ripley Home Video) and really looks great.

The nominees this time around in no particular order are...!

    Eyeball
    Lizard in a Woman's Skin
    Don't Torture a Duckling
    Victim of Sunspots
    Seven Black Notes

Disclaimer: i'm certainly forgetting something very marvellous and it's true that no Argento movies would get on even my top ten list.
