Went down to my local Wal-Mart, planning on buying one tonight and getting a refund tomorrow. No luck. They had pulled all the players from the floor. They're going to bring them back out at 8am. Apparently, tons of people have called about the sale. They only have "around 20 or so" players. So these will probably sell out really early.

Also stopped by Best Buy. My local store only carries the Toshiba HD-A3.

And, not surpsingly, Bill Hunt shits all over this deal at The Digital Bits, going so far as to declare the sale illegal.

Is this price drop the end of HD DVD? Something doesn't seem right with that.

This doesn't seem right, but damn that is cheap!! Very tempting, though I've really convinced myself I'd wait for a cheap combo player.

No. These are the end of the 2nd Gen players from Toshiba. The 3rd Gen players (HD-A3) are already on the store shelves.

Sony did the same thing with the last of their PS3 60GB models a few weeks ago. There was a huge sale at Amazon dropping the price under $400 with a couple free discs.

I think it's also a jab at Blu-Ray. A couple weeks ago, HD was planning on putting up some impressive sales numbers with their exclusive Transformers discs. But BR stole their thunder with a huge B1G1 sale. So this is probably a little payback.

That $99 price is worth it just for the 5 Free HD-DVD discs.

I love this format war. $99 Players and Buy 1 Get 1 Free discs. I can't wait to see the other sales that'll pop-up this holiday season.

Yeah, I've been cutting Hunt a lot of slack but he really did go overboard on that one. He's become both less reliable and less relevant as time goes by. Sites like HighDefDigest.com update frequently and constantly. Seems like DigitalBits is the last to know about this stuff.

Yes, Toshiba is dumping the remaining stock of A2's on the market to make way for the A3, but it's a SMART movie. It reinforces their price advantage and gets some people to jump on board who wouldn't have before, it all creates good word of mouth.

The only thing that's really wrong with it it that it's creating an expectation of these prices lasting. The true $200 player is really a cheap knock of and that's what will become the workhorse once Toshiba's through clearing stock on discontinued players.

I got to Wal-Mart around 7:45am and was 4th in line. By 8am a bunch of people were lined up behind me. They only had about 20-25 units. I'm sure all of them were gone by 8:15am.

Picked up the player and Sleepy Hollow HD-DVD for $119 total. This will make a great Christmas present for my brother.

Yeah just got back from two wal-marts, both were sold out and only had 16 players each. What upset me was that they stated selling the players at 7am! And I got there at 7 30 and they were already gone. Some woman bought 5 even though it was 1 per customer. I'm going to go to Best Buy and price match it there now, at least try to get an hd-dvd player.

I got up bright and early and landed one at my local Walmart.

I have always said I won't bite until the format war is over/decided, but no way can I pass up a $100 player. Here's to hoping it isn't a paperweight in a couple of years.

Here's some tips for the new HD-DVD owners:

Don't pick Full Metal Jacket on the 5 Free HD-DVD rebate. It looks like that's the first version which got horrible reviews. If you really want that film, buy the new Deluxe version.

The player doesn't come with an HDMI cable, so you'll need to buy one. Get it at monoprice.com for around $7 shipped. Everybody on the home theater forums shops there. Don't waste $20 or more getting the cables at a B&M store.

So it starts. Are you saying they are all ready double dipping HD already?

Bluray had the same thing with The Fifth Element. The first releases were SHIT transfers. Same with FMJ on HD DVD.

    The new release is stellar.

    Here's how you know.

I hopped in as soon as I could at 5pm and of course, no units were still in stock. Great deal for those who could make the early trip. Maybe Black Friday will have another deal at $98-99.
