Wow. I'm just finishing watching Hell Night, and yeah, it really is a disappointing transfer. I mean it certainly looks better than the dvd. But it's one of those releases where you forget that you're watching it in HD. And the print damage is really prevalent, and particularly noticeable given how dark the movie is. I don't feel like I got anything new out of watching it again.

I think a big part of the disappointment comes from the long process of actually getting this released. It was rumoured, then denied, then confirmed, then delayed. After all the hype and discussion and the way Scream seemed to be treating it as a big deal, I think most people were expecting something pretty special. And this is really anything but. I mean Hell Night has never been a personal favorite, but even I was pretty excited to finally get it on Blu after all the lead up.

Maybe this is the clearest and most film like this movie will ever look? I don't know. But I don't think anybody can say that Scream did the best they could, considering all the print damage that has been left untouched. I mean at the very least they could have removed tons of white scratches and flecks in the darker scenes.

Now imagine if Hell Night WAS a personal favorite (as it is one of mine). It’s been at the top of my list of most-wanted slashers since the dawn of blu-ray. This was actually the first Anchor Bay DVD that I ever bought, and one of the first slashers I ever saw. It was also one of the movies that really got me into the genre. So it holds a bit of a special place for me.

But that’s a perfect way to describe it. You forget you’re watching it in HD. It doesn’t look good. At all.

Given the hype they gave it, this release was a massive letdown in the A/V department. (I’ll give them some credit though - the extras were pretty great)

What else is new? Shout’s sales fucking blow. They’ve always sucked. I’ve never bought anything from any of them.

Arrow. Now that’s how you do a sale.

Totally agree. I'm always finding myself buying titles I'm not sure about and then selling them off due to Arrow's tempting sales! :p

I have no problem double dipping and I hate when people complain about price, but $35 is a tad out of my price point.

From memory The Strangers is more of a $5 bargin bin movie. It's an easy pass for me.

I liked Strangers but I'm not big on owning modern films.

It was ok but nothing too memorable. I'm more accepting of modern got to these days. There's been some really good ones.

So I "stumbled" upon a BD rip of the Hell Night disc.
I won't be upgrading my DVD. The BD might be a bit sharper, but there is still almost no fine details in the new transfer.
Plenty of annoying line and scratches , that could have been fixed, if they actually had put some effort in the remastering.
4K sure was overkill on this one. It almost looks like an upscale anyways.
And talking about upscale, those inserts run in like 10fps.

No, I rather watch the movie on my old DVD, as it had a cleaner and complete transfer.
If I'm going to upgrade a movie to BD, it better be a huge improvement.
Let's hope some Euro label can dig up a better transfer in the future.

blu-ray to me should always outshine the dvd by being more sharper.. and this one wasn't. FAIL.

The Extras on the Hell Night Blu Ray are terrific, though.
