I'd not seen Hammer Horror films before deciding to give this set a try. So far I've seen them all except the Frankenstein disc. I thought The Mummy was good but the Dracula titles didn't do much for me.
What are some of the top titles I should be checking out?
Those two Dracula films are rather weak. My favorite Hammer film is Twins of Evil. The essentials in my opinion are Curse of Frankenstein, Horror of Dracula, Dracula: Prince of Darkness and The Mummy. Hammer films can be rather dry, but the ambiance is always terrific.
It goes somewhat against the grain but I don't think any of Hammer's Dracula's with Christopher Lee are any good (not even Horror of Dracula). I enjoy them in their own little way because I like Gothic horror from the period, but they're not good examples of it. However Brides of Dracula, which ironically Christopher Lee is NOT in, is one of the better films Hammer made and I'd recommend that one. I'd also recommend Vampire Lovers, especially over Twins of Evil which is a bit of a mess frankly (sorry buck135 ).
The Frankenstein series on the other hand is pretty good through and through, with Evil of Frankenstein being the worst although I don't specifically recall Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed, but it seems to have good marks in reviews. I should brush up on that one. The other two Mummy movies are pretty good too.
As long as you didn't say Vampire Circus was better. I love the Karnstein trilogy, through Lust of a Vampire isn't as good as the other two. Twins of Evil is certainly a mess, but a fun mess to watch.
Dracula: Prince of Darkness really resonates with me and the Studiocanal blu-ray is a masterpiece. Bela will always be Dracula, but Mr. Lee certainly held his own.
