I think one of the better remakes is House on Haunted Hill. the worst would be I think I would have to say the Haunting.
The elite 5 greatest remakes of all time are: THE THING THE FLY INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS (1978) THE BLOB THE RING The 2 I absolutely despise: PSYCHO THE HAUNTING
I agree with Cujo's list, except that I would probably replace The Blob with NOTLD '90. The Blob was a decent enough movie, but not good enough for the top 5, IMHO. Psycho '98 was without a doubt the single worst remake I have ever seen. When you fuck with Alfred Hitchcock, you're fucking with the wrong cock!
THE THING HORROR OF DRACULA INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS (78 version) NOTLD:90 CURSE OF FRANKENSTEIN
     All I can do is agree with all of you so far on what you think is the best and worst.
Not a horror movie, but the absolute worst remake I've ever seen is "The Truth About Charlie". This also gets my vote for one of the worst movies I've ever seen, as I saw this piece of garbage BEFORE I saw "Charade", and still hated it! Not even the hot-as-fuck Thandie Newton could save this jumbled mess of a movie. Jonathan Demme...what happened?!?!
I loved Night of the Living Dead 1990... it has to be my all-time favorite remake. Also, I would say that Psycho is the worst I have seen, although I still like it. I haven't seen that many remakes but it is the worst of the ones I have seen.
Are we hating on Psycho 98? If so, I want in on it. That movie is hands down the worst remake ever. I can't even bear to see some of the actors from that movie, as it just reminds me of that horrid movie experience. :fuck:
I was thinking about this, I'm less inclined to call The Thing, etc "remakes" because they were adapted from the same source, the book. I would be happier to consider them "adaptations". On the other hand, while Psycho (98) was also based off of a book, it was a direct handling of the original film material. Same goes with Nosferatu... Here we go, best remake: Nosferatu (Herzog) Worst: Psycho (98)
I love THE BLOB remake, it's a great update of a 50's Horror classic. Chuck Russell did a great job with this one, and I love Shawnee Smith as the heroine.
The best is The Thing hands down IMO. Others are night of the living dead 1990,The Fly,House on Haunted Hill, and 13 Ghosts.
I've skipped a lot of remakes due to the trailers sucking so bad and the natural issue of popular / mainstream filmmaking being impacted by factors like market research and audience testing, etc. Because I know the millennium in horror is the result of studios only making the movies they think audiences will buy tickets to rather than what really made horror, which are films the actual filmmakers made themselves. Based on ideas they had themselves. About serious issues and with the presence of mind to challenge audience comfort and their ideas on the world around them. Etc. But, in my masochistic curiosity, I've definitely seen enough shitters to unfortunately be able to speak with a great deal of personal experience on the topic. The Fog is the worst to-date. Though I made it all the way through that and didn't even bother with 1998's Carnival of Souls after maybe 4 minutes. I might have just not been in the mood. The non-sucking millennial remake comes directly from the original film not being as strong or as important to the genre: The Crazies and When a Stranger Calls are the best I've seen, though Romero's original is still a superior film as a whole. (Hey, I was in that remake's corner for so long... it just couldn't come to grips with the material and Romero was a master of cultural / social commentary in the 70's.)
