Yes, we're moving this to the LD Forum.

But, you're right, E-Bay can be dicey. More often than not, they're just not shipped properly.

HOWEVER, wanting a "new" LD player is actually a bad idea. For one thing, most of the best players were made in the mid-90s. The last few players made (not including the heavy-duty high quality Japanese ones) were actually LOWER in quality, as the format's days became numbered. Thus, a CLD-D704 from 1995 is way better than a CLD-D606 from 1997 (both were the best players of their respective years, non-Elite models)

Also, a LD player has belts, gears, and clamps. These moving parts MUST be kept moving to remain lubricated and free from dry-rot. Any "new" player you buy now is guaranteed to have been sitting in a box, unused, for at least 6 years.

If you go over to the alt.video.laserdisc newsgroup, there's a guy there named Kurtis Bahr who re-conditions players. Never dealt with him before, but I've heard he knows his shit. Also check out places like the Home Theater Forum, you can find well-cared for players there sometimes too.

Also, if you really do want a new one, you can but it on ebay and have it shipped right to Kurtis. He'll do a nice tune up on it for you. it may end up costing you an extra $100, but you'll get the comfort you want from a nice, new player.

Home Theater Forum - Hardware For Sale Forum - players appear there every now and then, though sometimes the prices are way too high.
