No way, PHENOMENA beat out BIRD WITH THE CRYSTAL PLUMAGE and THE STENDHAL SYNDROME - two of his best.

Glad that Phenomena is #3 on the poll, it's deserves it. But Deep Red should be above Suspiria. Then you would have a great top 3 order.

I can't live without early Argento.

Yeah, no matter how I try, the truth is, I can lie without Deep Red and Phenomena. Trauma is just mediocre too. Cat O' Nine Tails has really risen in my respect.

    Early Argento is the best....

I find it surprising that so many people hold PHENOMENA in such high regards... While I enjoy the film quite a bit, I think it's easily the least of his pre-TRAUMA films... My top five would include SUSPIRIA in the top spot, followed closely by TENEBRE, DEEP RED, INFERNO, and OPERA.

Me too, the tribe has voted! :p

Again, the tribe has voted! :p But I, myself prefer Deep Red over Suspiria too.

I agree, John. I never thought Phenomena was one of the better Argento films. Actually, truth be told, I HATE it! :D

Anyways, here are a few Argento films I recommend:

Suspiria and Deep Red - Without question, his two best films, with two totally different feels. I'm not sure which one I prefer, since it always changes, but recently I've been liking Deep Red more than Suspiria. Both are five star films, though.

Tenebrae and Two Evil Eyes - My second favorite, although beware, while Argento's segment in Two Evil Eyes is a five-star masterpeice, Romero's sucks; albiet good makeup effects from Tom Savini. Tenebrae is a film I like more and more everytime I see it. I remember hating it when I first saw it on IFC in 2000.

Opera and Bird with the Crystal Plumage - Good films, tied for third place.

I recommend these 6 films, they are his best, imo.

  11. The Argento's that you do not have, but I would highly suggest getting are:

Deep Red: Probably my favorite Argento Giallo, with a excellent soundtrack

Inferno: An outstanding, beautiflly filmed sequel to Suspiria

    Tenebrae: Another great Giallo

Opera: Dark, violent, twisted... Highly recommended!

The Bird With The Crystal Pummage: Argento's first Giallo, still good after all these years
