Trying to watch Fulci - Why do I do this to myself?

I must be ill. Why do I rent Manhatten Baby against the advice of every review I have ever seen?
Even though I have hated practically every Lucio Fulci movie I've ever seen?
Even though I knew that "Bob" kid is in it :eek1: ... only now he calls himself "Tom"... but we aallll know he's "Bob" ... don't we....
Even though as I watch it I can see how fucking awful it is?
Why is it still on as I type this?

    WWWHHHHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY?
    WHAT'S WRONG WITH ME???!!!!!!

Watch out for the guy being impaled on spikes, after that it's downhill. The music is good if I remember correctly and Bob is always good.

Nah - the bird attack is cool :)

Manhattan baby is a fun watch - as long as you're not expecting The Beyond or anything. Why do you do it? Coz you really enjoy it, but can't admit it. ;)

The music should be good as they used Frizzi's music from previous films.
I really liked the bird attack, you almost couldn't see the attached wires :D
Still this one is very stylish in places and though it's not my favorite Fulci,I still enjoy it every now and then.

The opening scene in Egypt is pretty cool. I liked this movie but I can't explain why. You gotta love the laser eye scene!

    No i don't... ;)
Something else that was really annoying was the snake sound effect - since when does a snake sound like that?????

It was like Lucio held a mic right up to his teeth and went "PSSSSSS!!! PWSSSSS! PSSSHHHH!" over and over and then played it full crank through a ghetto blaster on set!

Jesus... it was like no one even tried on this film!!

I'm afraid I didn't even finish watching it by the way so I missed this so-called cool bird scene mentioned above...

I intend to watch/buy The Beyond/Zombi2/City of the Living Dead and that's it - no more Fulci for me. ugh.

Don't give up on Fulci completely. Some of his non-horror stuff is incredible. I've been pimping "Four of the Apocalyse" since I saw it yesterday. As far as I'm concerned It's a better film than any of his horror stuff.

Don't give up on Fulci till you watch "Touch of Death", a great over-the-top black comedy. I still laugh at the cat kicking scene to this day.

Frightfan, I was being sarcastic about the laser eye scene. When I first watched Manhattan Baby, I thought it sucked bad. However, I got the urge to watch it again... and I still hated it. When the DVD was released I had to get it but this time I loved it. Strange. Sure, it's flawed but it's still a lot of fun.

You know, I've been asking myself the same thing. I thought Manhattan Baby was terrible and the worst Fulci film I've seen so far. It's not the worst movie ever, but it's pretty dull - even "Bob" couldn't save it! :(

I liked it overall. It's a lot like his other movies from the same period, like THE BEYOND, minus the gore. So if you like Fulci only for the gore (which probably 90% of us do) then there's probably no value in MANHATTAN BABY. However, I think it's just shoddy enough and confusing enough to be entertaining. Thus, it narrowly receives a passing grade. I give it a C-.

I have never bought into this "it's so bad it's good" stuff.

It's no wonder Hollywood feeds us films like Battlefield Earth when shit like Manhatten Baby is touted as "entertaining".

Here's an idea - how about all the filmmakers try to make something so good that it's good...

    hmm? *nudge* heh? *wink*:blabla:

I'm not stupid enough to think that every shitty movie was done that way on purpose - sometimes it's just too obvious that a tone was attempted and failed.

I don't think any director would say:"Hey lets make a crappy, cheezy and above all shitty movie so that people find it entertaining to watch".

Could well be that Fulci had a deeper meaning with this movie

Bob, is like the worst actor ever. In Manhatten Baby, is the dubbing just as bad as House by the Cemetery.
