Dagon is one of my favorite horror films. Its mastery of atmosphere and dread--while still maintaining a sly wit--keeps me returning to it. (Let us never speak of the CGI.)

No love for GHOSTS OF MARS? I loved that one, classic Carpenter, miss those days...

    The others:

The Others (see what I did there)
    Jeepers Creepers
    Valentine (underrated)
Jason X (got a train ticket while going opening night, ended up costing me $182.50 to see it, but still worth it to see my first Friday flick in the theaters)

Put me in the "I didn't know it was such a good year for horror" camp too.

    The Others
    Dagon
    Kairo
    Suicide Club
The Hole (not really horror, but a pretty damn interesting film)

Yet another vote for: wow, this year didn't suck so bad. A very good example of what might have been, had the decade aimed for intelligence and atmosphere-oriented horror instead of sleek, hollow industrialized crap.

    1. Suicide CIRCLE ("Club" is clearly an American abuse in retitling, to cash-in on Fight Club's cult popularity, it's not even about a fucking club)

    2. Session 9
    3. Ichi the Killer
    4. Jeepers Creepers
    5. Bones (underrated, by the way)

I've unfortunately missed Devil's Backbone and The Forsaken (which actually looks entertaining), Dagon had a great middle but the beginning and ending sank it, Valentine is a profoundly sickening film for all the wrong reasons- it really should be studied, The Others is yet more proof that there is nothing scary about ghosts, the only moment of horror in The Happiness of the Katakuris is when the father holds the flashlight under his chin and scares the family (which is played for comedy), Pulse was... just okay (another side effect of the ghost-horror phenomenon: it is not scary watching people act depressed), and Jason X is a giant nothing but it's shockingly a better giant nothing than the usual parade of Bush-era crap I typically complain about.

Even the trash this year is more fascinating than most of the "good" horror that came out from '03-'13.
