It'd defintely come down to George Carlin and Richard Pryor for me. Big fan of Eddie Murphy too, but without Pryor he (along with Chris Rock, Dave Chappelle, etc.) probably wouldn't even be around. Shit, I can't decide between those two.

I've been really liking Carlos Mencia a lot, wasn't too familiar with him before....I also love Kathy Griffin too, and I'm going to see her this Saturday when she comes to Portland...

Redd Foxx all the way...his "Video In A Plain Brown Wrapper" is 60 of the funniest minutes you will ever see. I spent many a night abusing myself with various substances in college and watching this with friends laughing our asses off...and I still get the same joy out of it today.

How could I forget VIDEO IN A PLAIN BROWN WRAPPER? That is such a hilarious video! I still watch Sanford & Son regularly, but this stand up gig features Redd at his uncensored raunchiest.

Wow, that's a long list of American comedians. :D

For me it's easily Eddie Izzard. He's not American though.

Of those listed I have to go with Richard Pryor. He was able to use strong language in a way as to make it seem not only natural, but at times, even poignant. The movies had a hard time writing for Pryor, his talent was too mercurial for features, but on stage,he was truly in his element.
I agree with Dwatts though,if we open up the list to international comics,Eddie Izzard is outstanding.
Of the ladies out today,Kathy Griffin is one of the brightest.

I went with George Carlin as I've loved him the longest, but I'd also like to add Doug Stanhope, Eddie Izzard, Lisa Lampanelli, Sarah Silverman, Artie Lange, Nick DiPaolo, Alexei Sayle, Lewis Black and Patton Oswalt to my list.

There were some good ones mentioned here and I'm a fan of most of them. I'm sure I could probably go on forever with this but I gotta cut it short somewhere. :D

P.S. - I'm also thrilled to see nobody mentioned Dane Cook. That's a good thing.

well, that's because the topic is stand-up COMEDIAN. A comedian, by definition, must be funny. Dane Cook clearly does not fit that term.

I'm surprised to see the love for Andrew Dice Clay and Sam Kinison. Funny, no doubt about that, but the ultimate examples of one-joke guys. The first time you hear Sam Kinison go off on one of his screaming rages, it's hilarious. But that's all he had. And Dice, it's like Dennis Miller said: Fonzie with Tourette's Syndrome. Big deal...nursery rhymes with the word "pussy" in them.

Other. Where's Lenny Bruce? A poll for stand-up comedians without him?

Amazingly enough, there are few (if any) Jews represented either. I've always thought that the funniest comedians happen to be Jewish, or Canadian, or Jewish Canadian. Small wonder I can't make a choice off that list.

I've never done PMs. Can't say why. As far as I'm aware, nobodys ever tried to PM me before. I'm not even sure how I would send one if I wanted to. You wanted to tell me something?

It's amazing how the choice of "other" can empower you to vote for any comedian you like. Obviously any list limited to 20 will not cover all tastes. Most comedians on the list I chose randomly. God knows smashing watermelons on a continual basis usually won't help you to crack a top list of all time.

I could understand complaints had I not included an "other" choice.

    And Richard Lewis sucks. :p

  18. I love Dudley Moore & Peter Cook as " Derek & Clive " from the 70's, also Billy Connolly.

No problem, but I tried to PM you for one. Nothing urgent. ;)

And as an American without a need to see anywhere else, you did the expected - chose a bunch of other Americans. Absolutely nothing wrong with that - it was just funny. :D I almost voted you as the best comedian.

So you brought it up because?

Look dwatts, I made a thread that I thought could be fun. If you don't like the format I used then fine. I'm not surprised at this point how you would attempt to spin this thread into a jab at me considering our differences in the Saddam hanging thread. If you want to vote and mention who is your favorite comedian and why then fine. If not then please, take your political baiting elsewhere. :fucked:
