A home-made stand or ... ?
If you got any photos , share please ...
(Are you a tidy person , having spare plastic dvd covers to change damaged ones or you don't care , Are you grouping the series together , Are you grouping the dvds with having the same sized plastic covers together or ... )

I use three wooden shelves plus the top of my desk to store mine. The top shelf is Euro Horror, the second shelf is American Horror, and the third shelf is Non-Horror flicks. The computer shelf has all of my box sets, special editions (like in a different case...like THE WICKER MAN, REPO MAN, BAD TASTE, etc.), and my crapper snappers. I'm weird with grouping. For Euro, I have the AB Argento discs in order, then the Fulci AB disc in order, then the rest of the miscellaneous Euro releases (from AB). Then I have Shriek Show, VCI, and the rest. I have the original defective OPERA disc in a CD case, so as to remember that whole fiasco. I'm weird, I know. For American, I just go by companies, in the order that I have the most. Like I have 14 from AB, so they go first. Then my 9 MGM's, etc. The non-horror is just in alphabetical order by company as well. The "special" rack is more or less in alphabetical order, but not really. The box sets are on either end, as are the larger boxes. I know this is pointless crap, but you did ask...

alphabetical...which kills me sometimes...like Army Of Darkness not being with the other 2 dead films bugs me etc... but I keep my 350+ in a walk in closet along with 1200+ cd's and a few books. I used those shelves that you can re-size with the rails you attach to the wall and lined the walls of the closet. It's not a big closet 1 person is perfect 2 people is ok but the max. You basiclly have DVD's on 1 wall CD's on the other and books on the other. There is a "short" wall on the same wall as the door way that holds the some VHS tapes too. oh yeah...and I removed the door to the closet so it is more like "part of the room". It's the closet it my Home Office room. email me and I can take some pics if anyone is interested.
I have two custom made DVD holders. Each holds about 400 discs and I have my boxsets on the top of the holders right now. It is nice since it hides my DVD's, keeping my curious daughters hands from meddling (for now).

AndrewBBD , nice setup ... the posters looks cool ...
I have them all on this wooden thingy, if I can get a picture I'll be sure to post it. I have them seperated into two categories. Horror and Non-Horror. Then there are various VHS tapes scattered throughout the shelves too. Oh yeah, great set up AndrewBBD, I got that same Halloween poster and those Jason and Michael big head things.

I have giant bookcases built into my computer room, so I keep mine there. They are alphabetical, with my tv series being seperate from my movies.
Alphabetical, regardless of genre, with the only movies separated from their sequels being the Evil Dead Trilogy.
This was before quite a few additions to the collection. The racks are black plastic, stackable things from FYE.

I've got mine on a bookshelf. The box sets, snappers and oddly packaged discs go on the top, and the rest of the DVDs go below. I've got them sorted first by company which is alphabetical (AB first, Universal last), then the DVDs of each company are alphabetized. Just makes things look more consistent IMO.

This is my very first post! Woohoo! :)
Anyways, I have always been a huge horror fan of the 80's (being I was born 1980 :)) but never owned DVDs up until late. So bear with me my collection is very small. I find my self buying 2 horror dvds per week so my collection should increase quite a bit. Anyways, here are pics of my dvd setup + home theatre:

Yeah, I noticed that even jason goes to Hell and Jason X are different, they both say Friday the 13th. I might consider getting those covers once I get all the Fridays on dvd. Oh and don't feel bad about your collection being small, compared alot of these guys my collection is pretty puny, I converted to dvd in December of 2001. I think I have 106, maybe a little less.

At one point I had the whole of my collection on a set of two bookshelves with 8 shelves each. Each shelve could hold 53 across, but they were double-stacked. With my collection nearing the 1000 mark I ran out of space long ago. I am now opting to go for a more subtle look. I have purchased DVD binders that hold 200 disks each. My collectors editions, such as Jurassic Park Box set, and my various tins will still be displayed.
It took me a long time to come to terms with this decision. Its hard to go into the room and not see all my DVDs clearly organised before me.
Thankfully, most of the discs have pistures on them and the respective title of the film. A few, sadly, do not... Man Who Wasn't There, The Barber. The biggest pains are the double sided discs that have the title written in microscopic letters along the inner wheel.
I'm still not used to the new way I store my discs, but space is a factor. I still wish they had kept with the initial plan to release DVDs in both amary and jewel cases. Jewel cases were one huge attraction for me in the begining because of my extensive VHS collection and the fact that I could not store them all in an eye-pleasing, room conscious way. Amary cases are really no more space conscious then VHS. Oh well... the quality is what really matters to me now.

i need to invest in a case for my dvds, theyre sorta squeezed into a bookcase at the moment and theyre overflowing.. plus im paranoid theyll be stolen.. a nice lockable cabinet that can hold at least 500 would be nice
David666
03-29-2003, 03:58 PM
If ever I go on a trip, my disc binders get locked up in a gun safe. I've invested too much in my collection for them to walk off. I am especially paranoid of that now because they are in the binders. It would be easy to walk off with a binder in each hand... poof, four hundred discs gone. I'd have to track down and kill the criminal that did that though.

You can keep your DVD's in binders with no problems as long as you don't toss them around. No scratches here. I was freaked out carrying them through the airport though, but I'd trust having them in hand than mailing them to myself.

Yea those shelves are great and pretty cheap. $19.99 at Walmart:D I need 1 or 2 more now, since I took that picture I have completely filled the shelves I have now. The dvds have cost us quite a bit but hell we never go anywhere anyways. Usually we just order out food and watch a movie or if we can't decide what to watch I'll go get a new one.
David666
03-30-2003, 03:18 PM
I have not had any problems with my binders scratching my discs. The side of the page that faces the pre-recorded area is a soft surface. Besides, I had several discs that were loose inside their cases because the case was broken when I bought it... that alone has done more damage to my collection then I can ever see the binders doing. For the size of my collection, this is the most space concious way to store them. Until I can have a room in my home where I can turn an entire wall into a series of shelves exclusively for DVDs, the binders will do nicely.

Completely out of room now. :(
Here's a test picture (http://home.houston.rr.com/luna715/messy-entertainment-center.jpg) that was taken around Xmas time, with my (then) new digital camera. We knocked out some of the cardboard crap behind the entertainment center, so you see all the wires and it looks messy. It looks a lot better when there's no flash brightening the area by oh, 1000%. Oh god, and the wires coming from the cable box, going all over the place, have since been put through the wall, so no more wirey mess. The cable man didn't wanna get in trouble with the apartments while installing our cable so he left us that mess of tangled wire about a day or two before I took the picture.
Also, the rack is a bit messy, but that's not my section. :p Mine begins from the 4th shelf up. First 3 shelves are various animated things, sci-fi and comedies that I did not purchase and generally do not belong to me -- and neither does that freakin' mess of VHS tapes at the bottom of the DVD rack! Everything above that is horror and MST3K, mostly. Top shelf is all box sets that fit no place else. The shelf under that holds my X-Files box sets and Asian horror. The one below that holds my Euro-Horror. The one under that holds Twilight Zone, Criterion and various Hollywood horror films. Under that are various Halloweens, Psychos, MST3K and Something Weird DVDs. What's sad is I have plenty more DVDs now... :nervous:
That rack is basically cheap $5 wire stackable thingies you can get from Walmart -- it holds 2 rows of DVDs, and approximately 500 at that, give or take some. We thought it was a very inexpensive solution compared to what we'd seen. We got ours from The Container Store, where a guy tried to sell us a gorgeous Scandinavian wooden modular shelving system. As much as I would have loved it, we just didn't have a thousand bucks or the room to spare and he didn't wind up with a sale. I don't think the guy looked very pleased when we showed him our solution. It may not be aesthetically pleasing, but it damn well does the job for CHEAP, and that's what counts!
We have the rack pretty much held to the wall with a large picture frame holder (hooked onto the wire, V shaped) and oh yeah, I really wanted to spray paint the sucker black 'cause I'm not a big fan of white, but that's another story!

I'd LOVE to get a nice wooden one that displays them all, but that'd take up an insane amount of space for me... space we just don't have, so we built it up high to accomodate everything in the least amount of space possible. It's nice that the rack is pretty narrow too. One of these days when I get a house, I may try to build my own custom shelving. In the meantime, though, $40 was a pretty decent price to pay to store 'em, even if the two row thing is only slightly inconvenient! ;)
The better thing is that we have the same thing in the computer room, storing TONS of VHS tapes, MST3K and otherwise... we got all 8 stackable thingies for free 'cause the cashier forgot to ring it up... oopsie! :D

All the ones in the front are arranged in a particular order (Argento ones by year for instance, and by series, director and/or studio -- Something Weird, Criterion and Full Moon for instance) and I get agitated if I look at 'em and one is not where it should be. I'm also terribly anal about straightening the DVDs so that none are hanging out of shelves more than the others and whatnot. :D
That's how you can tell where my fiance's shelves end (his Ranma case is on its side AND sticking out, aiee!) and mine begin. :p

Storing my DVDs ain't really a problem yet even though I'm heading toward the 600 mark.
I have them alphabetically listed by year of release but it's always a hassle to squeeze in the new ones ...
So I think I'll try to order them by company now, dunno if it does any good but hell, I'm in the mood to rearrange my entire collection. Should take a while but lucky me I'm on a two week vacation :D

My ABs arent together, I have all the Steven Kings together, a foreign section and directors together and the CCs seperate.
Which is getting a little funky because The Cronenbergs are together minus Dead Zone (Stephen King) and Dead Ringers (Criterion). Same with the Depalmas with Sisters and Carrie. Now theres no Carpenter CC but the Haloweens are all together and of course Christine screws that up too. Plus the foreign section looked good when it was one solid shelf but now its overflowing to another row and doesnt look as good.

I can right click to see them at least. They must not allow remote hosting to here. Which is strange considering they allow it to DVDTalk which must cause more traffic hitting his bandwidth than here would.

Well i have my collection of now over 1100 (pitiful I know) strewn over the following:
- 2 Ikea wall mount racks with nice glass doors (which unfortunately have been discontinued or I would have continued buying them)
- 15 stacks of 30 discs each along a shelf in a nearby closet.
- box sets on top of a CD bookcase already filled with another 1000 CDs.
If anyone know of high capacity racks with a lower price per DVD stored, I would appreciate it. Best I've found is a rack sold here (http://www.spinkeeper.com/15mulwaldes.html) that holds 680 for around $200 (or about $0.29/DVD stored).

They have a small one, too. They're nice looking for the $30-$40 they want for them. I think they were on sale on top of that, too. I'd definately snag one if I had a few extra bucks.

The other way I had it was terrible, but for a measly $50, it worked well enough. This is SO much better though, filling up unused space by my kitchen and behind my front door.

We considered bookshelves because they'd be higher than a regular stand, which would be a definite plus, but we decided against it because we figured if we're gonna pay for a bookshelf, we might as well pay for storage that's the proper size, width, etc. to contain the DVDs. :D
I say as long as you're happy with it and it works for you, then freakin' great! Bookshelves are surely better and more attractive than what we had before. :D

Seems simple enough in your case. You should have made a list of your movie and simply indicate in which drawer they are. Not to mention it would be quite easy to put the same genre in the same drawer and put all the movies from the same director together. Mines are all numbered.

i need a new one, mine's full, maybe its because I use VHS tapes as "bookends" because the edges of the shelf are really rough and jagged. Take all the pictures of yourself and erect them into several DVD racks.

I converted an old walk-in closet into a dvd vault.
I did something similar with a small coat closet. Unfortunately, the shelves I built can only hold a little over 400 DVDs (it's a small closet), so the rest I have scattered on the floor next to them. :(

Argh, Demon, I get nervous just looking at that picture! I keep picturing all the DVDs you have stacked on top falling off!
I have them in a closet shelf right now, but my collection is quickly outgrowing the closet. What I really want is something closed to protect my DVDs from dust, but something big that will still accomodate my collection for years to come.

specially seeing as that door to the left seems to open into the case.. all it would take would be someone to swing the door open a bit too hard and those dvds will be all over the place!

thats a back door, we only use it from the inside and it stays locked so nobody can swing it open, ofcourse the dvds aren't usually stacked that high you, I just wanted to get them all in the picture :D

What I like about my dvd collection, is that I can close up the doors, and it looks very inconspicuous. I get paranoid about theives, and I don't like the idea of someone looking through the window and seeing a dvd goldmine. ;)

By subgenre and some by director. Kinda wacky but all the slashers are together, serial killer flicks, series/sequels, ect. Then the Criterions, Steven King movies, Lynch, Cronenberg...
I know where everything is. :D

I drive a 1991 Geo Prism. The stereo system I have in my car is worth more than the car. Do you get what I am saying. I don't like to draw attention to stuff that is valuable. I doubt someone would be scoping out a piece of shit like mine expecting to find something to jack. Sure, it has happened once, but that was my fault, I left the window open. Things like that happening have made me more cautious. And its not like I expect a cable dude to outright gank one of my dvds off of the rack. Its more like this: maybe he's a shady character, maybe later that weekend when him and his buddies are thinking about a place to rob, the cable dude remembers seeing all of my shit, and they decide its an easy target. they scope out the house, and when we leave, they move in. I may sound crazy to you, but I have heard of shit like that happening to good people. On a different note, having the dvds concealed also prevents my kids from reaching up there and grabbing one of my $40 OOP movies with their peanut butter covered fingers and says "Hey Mom, lets watch this"!!! Also, it keeps the dvds alot less dustier. And one more thing. I am not Knocking everybody's big ass collections, hell five to ten years ago I would have been the same way, really proud of my movies, and ready to show them off. But I guess I am just getting old, and have different things in mind. :)

I recently put all my movies in dvd books according to genre and alphabetical order. It took me 2 full days to do it. Now they are lined up 7 giant cd books. I kinda wish I hadnt done it but I'm not putting them back in the cases it was allready to much of a pain to take them out.
Here's a picture. I've got mine in the most simplest arrangement I can. Non-horror to the left, and horror to the right. From there they are in company order from greatest quantity to smallest, and in those little sub-categories they are in Alphabetical order/

Granted, this was shot about a year ago so those two LD box sets that were taking up 'filler space' are now removed so I can vertically stack a bunch of DVDs I've since gotten and had no other place to store them.
As for the racks - I got them at Office Depot for about $20 each (a little too much). I'd recommend checking out Ikea stores if you have any near you; they've got some awesome ideas and pretty decent prices to boot.

I keep most of my DVDs in plastic organizers that hold 30 each, and I have 6 of them. I purchased them at Best Buy about 5 or 6 years ago. They are no longer made. Then I also have metal organizers, about 3 right now, and another 2 still in the box, which holds another 28 each. I also have 2 DVD binders, which right now, I do not have DVDs in. And a media storage cabinet, which I don't have set up yet, but I will be putting my TV Shows, Box Sets, and Limited Edition DVDs in the cabinet.

Yeah yeah, thread resurrection. :p
How's everyone's collection looking now compared to when this thread originated? I've probably doubled my dvd volume since 2003 (from 300 to 600) with several sold or traded here and there. I've been trying to find more b&m deals lately as opposed to the eBay, Amazon, and DDD I originally did for the majority of my buying.
The main reason I bumped this is to see pics of more people's shelving since I'm really in need of ideas. :D And it's fun checking fellow HorrorDVDers cribs out. So, pimp out your updated spaces and I'll try do the same this weekend.
Well I've been shoved into one room as of late, so my collection is relegated to one huge cabinet and around my entertainment center. It's pretty disorganized as well. I think I'm just going to wait until I have a place of my own to get more shelves and hang all my posters back up.
Resurrection, baby! Just cleared a shelf for my HD-DVDs. My buying spree is over. I got tons of deals as they are practically giving them away, but it's time to go back to my rule of 'I have to watch it more than once a year to justify ownership'.

I have a closet in my man cave (basement) that has two doors that swing open to a little area I like to call "the vault". It has muliple shelves that hold CD's in binders, DAT tapes in beer flats, VHS tapes not yet on DVD are stacked in alphabetical order, DVD's are stacked in alphabetical order and backups are in their own individual clear slim jewel cases stacked with homemade hand written labels on the spine. When people look in here there's either an expression of excitement or confusion :)

I simply build my own out of wood to custom specifications for DVD's, CD's, and now Blu-rays. Shop class in Junior High had its benefits, and my father was always building stuff out of wood. I remember we built my first computer desk together for my Apple IIc back in '85/'86.
I'd take some pics of the shelves; but my old digital camera isn't working, so it'll have to wait until I get around to buying a new one.
