Although very well done in terms of acting, I didn't care for it...it is slow-moving, unrelentingly grim and ultimately depressing...SPOILER: And I hate movies that, no matter how well they're done, give you nothing and no one to "root" for...that's all I will say for now.

One of the most disturbing movies you'll ever see. This is guaranteed to unsettle even the hardened horror fan.

Channel 4 in the UK showed this film around 3 years ago. Although it's not the sort of film you'd watch twice, it is definitely worth viewing if you like your movies a little on the grim side...

I'd say rent rather than buy. And treat yourself to a good comedy afterwards. This is bleak stuff....

This is one of my top ten least favorites ever. It was a long horrid brutal exercise for no good reason. I like some killings and brutality mind you, but this was just over the top grim. I also agree with the above poster that there is no one to even remotely to root for. In addition, there is no real message or even distant humor.

For sure rent before you buy, I can't imagine too many folks would want to watch this over and over.

Seriously, if you like brutal along the lines of Henry or Maniac get it. Right away.

Like it, or hate it, Funny Games is a very interesting film.
Although I cannot imagine anyone to "like" this!

But THERE IS a real message.

I actually had a talk with the director 2 years ago and he mentioned something that I think everyone will agree on.
"If you feel like you can't watch the film and you leave the theatre, well, that's great. It means that you don't need it."
And he is 100% to the point.

What Haneke does in Funny Games is to take the usual elements of a thriller and adapt them to real life. In real life middle aged husbands and wives don't turn to fuckin' Rambo 15 minutes before the end. And a knife that appears just before the end won't save you. And dogs die. And kids can be killed too. Note that we never get a glimpse of real gory details: what we get is the reflection of the violence.

So, what haneke says in Funny Games is that, if you like violence in cinema, if you think that violence is "cool", well have it - raw, painful and ugly as it REALLY is.

That's why the killers are often facing the camera winking (is this the right word?) at us - the viewers, asking us questions about what should they do with their hostages. Because we are PARTNERS in their crime.

Now, I may disagree with that and I may find it preachy but what a great director he is! I mean, the son of a bitch simply asks for some eggs in the beginning and you feel sooo weird! Great film making from any point of view - editing, acting, unbelievable use of music... This is real cinema in my book.

Well said Chaostar. "Funny Games" is almost a unique film in the way that it attacks audience's expectations. Personally I see the film as an angry attack on screen (in particular Hollywood)violence and its use as entertainment. Haneke made a realistic film but at the same time he uses devices that uncomfortably "remind" people that we are watching "entertainment". It is probably the toughest film I've ever sat through with the possible exception of "Henry"

Yup, exactly my view!

And don't forget CLEAN, SHAVEN.
Now there's a tough film for you!

I saw a movie simular to this from what I read,,, but I cannot recall what the movie was called. But I remeber it was a family of 4 or 5- It started with the mom, dad, son and a little girl. But I remeber it was like 2 or 3 theifs broke into an house and there was an scene where one of the guys raped the son in the parents bed room.

I am hopeing this is not the same film. but either way the one I kinda remeber was pretty cool

Thanks for the reviews ..... will let you know what I thought of it.

Just don't invite me over dude, as nothing on earth is going to get me to watch this movie again. I guess I don't "need it."

But your avatar has me thinking of maybe firing Intruder up again, so that is something good that came out of having to remember this movie.

OnebyOne,

I feel ya man. I can see how allot of people are not wanting to see this movie twice. As for me.. I never seen it and I could not find it anywhere near my area to rent. I called my local BlockBuster and Hollywood Video and either one do not have it :( . So my chances are is I have to purchase it,, all in all its less then 10.00 blind buy.

-Don't get me wrong,, from what read for you all and other forums is seems to be a pretty sad and sick movie. I have a famliy (wife, 2 kids and no dog :) ) .. and I am pretty sure I will not be watching this one twice either. All in all I will not even have my wife see it with me. She thinks I am sick enough that I enjoy films like The Intruder and The Beyond :P .
I will let you all know what I think of it :)

Like it or hate it. You have to admit it leave's a powerful impression on people. The fact is from all the movies i own, none raise the amount of discussion and emotion among the friends i show it to as does Funny Games. Whether they end up liking it or hating it they all admit it's a well made, well acted film. Next to Sissy Spacek in Carrie you would be hard pressed to find a better dramatic performance by a lead Actress in any other horror Film.

True I probably wouldn’t want to watch it more then once a year. That still doesn't take away the fact that the realistic acting in this movie is hard to overlook.

Oh and The Chaostar what exactly did the director mean by "you don't need it" sorry a bit slow today.

great post chaoster,
my friend saw it on the sundance channel and i saw it for like nine bucks so i picked it up,
really really great film, for those people who dont like watching this shit, it about realism and the brutality of it, and the weird thing is i was reaching for the ****** at the same exact time as the killer, which i think is the point,
anyhow, the movie makes you feel, quite a lot, dread, uneasiness, anger, bleakness, joy, all kinds of human emotions,
well, i recently saw "the piano teacher" by haneke in the theaters and its just as rough a ride, i have it on DVD, too,
i also rented, "code unknown" but it fucked up in my player, so i never got to finish it, boo hoo

I meant that Funny Games has one basic purpose - to rub the true essence of violence in your face and prevent you to enjoy it as you do in many thrillers and mainstream films today. If you leave the film before it ends it means that you are indeed sickened by the whole thing - the movie has made it's point, you do not need it anymore.

I do not say that I agree 100% with that but it is an interesting point of view from the director and I understand him.
