Got a screener of this elusive flick this weekend, I really kinda liked it. It wasn't, however, as bloody and gory as many might think,(this being from a big fan of 'cannibal holocaust', so it takes a lot of karo syrup to impress me). after this long of a wait, i don't think anything could live up to my expectations, but at least i wasn't dissapointed (as I was in, say the remake of 'the mummy'). bottom line: It's a horror film made by a fan for the fans. It's not a sequel, not a remake, and has enough horror in-jokes to keep it rolling along nicely. Very much an homage to the genre, and I would like to see more of this type of thing in the future (instead of ANY more ben affleck or tom cruise movies). Now, if you out-and-out HATE rob zombie, and i mean HATE the guy, then you're probably not gonna like this. And while i, myself am not a big fan of his music, it seems that tastewise i have a lot in common with the guy (we both like cheerleaders), and his 'style' does bleed through to the film, but i think that makes for an interesting touch. Instead of examples like the remake of 'psycho', which employeed actors who hadn't even seen the original, rob zombie hired veterans of the horror genre, recognized by the those of us who've sat through such efforts in the past. It also has a very low-budget 'independant' movie feel, which i personally liked, as it echoed classics of the past (most all of our favs are low-budget efforts; 'evil dead', 'dawn of the dead', 'halloween', 'texas chainsaw'). Now, i haven't really seen any of rob zombie's music videos (t.v. does rot your brain, kids..), so i have nothing to compare it to, but as i've heard some Mtv watchers complain about in the past, it is bound come up as an issue. Hey, it's not gonna please everybody, but I'm just happy to have had an opportunity to actually watch the friggin' thing, as I have given up hope (after, what? 3 years) of it ever seeing the light of day and being 'officially' released). I think that, over time, it will become as big a classic as those 'staples' in all of our collections, and i pray that it gives the genre a much-needed boost, so that more of this type of thing gets out there.

What's funny is that most people will be okay with in-jokes here... when they weren't okay with in-jokes in a certain Kevin Williamson/Wes Craven film. Hypocracy? Irony?
Both.

OK, that is just a bit on the irritating side David. So that high horse you're sitting on, have you got a pet name for it? Your comment provides no constructive input, just an infammatory attack below the belt. I could ramble on about the points you brought up, for example: There is a difference between the "in-joke" and "stating-the-obvious", but I would go further in saying that I don't think Rob Zombie will fare well either. My question is, does it, or will it matter? After all, this is just one man's opinion, of course unless I share the same opinion as you it doesn't mean jack! But who am I to argue with you?

I'm sorry to have to ask this question because I know there have been a few other posts about this movie but I am still unclear about its release. Is a theatrical release totally out of the pictures? If so, does anybody know a round about date for the dvd release?

It's in theaters on April 11. IMDB lists it as a limited release on that date.

But it's only going to 300 theaters. So, it might as well be DTV because I won't be seeing it.
