Does anyone know if there is a widescreen (Region 1) version of Ginger Snaps?

The excellent Candian DVD is widescreen and is loaded with extras. I own it and treasure my copy.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention you can get it at most any online Canadian retailers. I got my copy at DVDBoxoffice.com about a year and a half ago.

i got mine a year or so ago, for about $30, but it is so worth the money!!

Do not feel too bad.

I have multiple versions of many movies.

The nice thing is that you can always sell it and pick up a few bucks. Making your Great New Canadian version even cheaper! :D

Cujo, is there any added costs for ordering across-the border (Canada) purchasing over the net? I'd definitely be interested in obtaining a copy somewhere online.

Thrash, I've ordered several Canadian discs (eXistenZ, THE HOLE, GS, etc.) in the past and it has never cost me extra. Shipping charges are pretty much the same. :)

I paid a bit more for shipping from Amazon.ca than I do from Amazon.com.

Yeah, but I don't use Amazon.ca, so I haven't had to pay more. As a matter of fact, DVDBoxOffice.com, which is the place I use most often, has free shipping, and that is why they are my favorite Canadian retailer.

Thanks for the info guys. I think I'll be ordering Brotherhood Of The Wolf and Ginger Snaps soon from somewhere out in net land. ;) :D

I dont know why a studio like Artisan would only release a full frame edition here in the US. Dont they know by now that no one wants to see a film on DVD unless its in the OAR? Thankfully the Canadians did something right for a change and put out a great SE "up there".

Unfortunately, that's no longer true. In the early days of DVD, when DVD, like Laserdisc before it, was a medium used only by film buffs and videophiles, it was true that OAR was a critical issue with the majority of the users of the medium. Sadly, as DVD becomes more mainstream (it's running pre-recorded VHS out of the market now), the "Average Joe" doesn't understand why he "can't see the whole picture" and has to "put up with those annoying black bars." It's an unfortunate trend that I expect will get worse, and which is even more infuriating to me now that I have a 16:9 TV.

Funny you ask this. I just bought this yesterday and watched it. It kicked MAJOR ass!!! This is a movie I will be watching every Halloween. I just love horror flicks that are shot in Autumn. Not to mention Katherine Isabelle is fucking HOT! Cinematography is top notch too! I can't say enough good things about this movie.

Anyways, I live in Canada and picked up the disc for $13 at my local Walmart. It's a widescreen transfer (1.85:1) with NO MATTING. The image quality is sharp and the colors are dead on. I couldn't be happier with the quality. I assume the disc I have is the Canadian one. Also has some nice extras too.

Great movie! And even better if you're Canadian :)

You can probably pick it up at www.absound.ca

Unless if you live in Canada and order from the states you won't get ripped off at customs. I usually have to pay and extra $10 for a fucking dvd to pass through US customs. I guess the same goes for our soft lumber too. We are used to it :)

The Amazon stores do, as well... I just usually buck up a few bucks to get it in a reasonable amount of time. Amazon's free shipping takes a few extra days.

Yeah, you're exactly right. Several large retailers in the US, including Wal-Mart, are actually insisting upon fullscreen versions. This is why you're starting to see more and more DVDs being released in both formats.

It's an unfortunate trend that I expect will get worse, and which is even more infuriating to me now that I have a 16:9 TV.

Fortunately, this may be the very trend that puts a stop to the dreaded fullscreen DVD trend. Since high-definition TVs are promoting widescreens, and the industry is slowly but surely moving towards high-definition broadcasts, the average Joe will eventually have to wonder why he's seeing those "annoying bars" on the sides of his TV with his fullscreen Wal-Mart DVD.

I consider the Canadian release to be an SE IMO. Great picture + widescreen + nice features. What more can one ask for ? The movie uses about 7.3 Gigs of the DVD-9, I guess they could cram another 2 gigs of something :P

If the US made a SE for Ginger Snaps it'd probably mirror the Canadian release with one or to added bonuses like trailers for the sequels. Still, the Canadian release IS the way to go. ;)

Actually, there IS some matting on the WS Ginger Snaps, yet there is more information on the sides. I think the matting improves the composition though. I did a comparison in my review:

http://www.horrordvds.com/reviews/a-m/gs-se/

And I took care to ensure that I used the exact same frame in my comparison. Check it out.

As far as:
In the early days of DVD, when DVD, like Laserdisc before it, was a medium used only by film buffs and videophiles, it was true that OAR was a critical issue with the majority of the users of the medium.

Actually, that's not entirely true. Laserdisc kinda went the opposite way DVD appears to go. It was introduced as solely an alternative to VHS, and the transfers were exactly the same. It was in the later years that people realized that LD could handle better sound, picture, etc. So it STARTED as a common consumer video system, but was eventually turned into a videophile-friendly medium.

DVD appears to be doing the reverse. It started out as a film buff's medium, but now with the proliferation of pan-and-scan discs and consumer indifference to extra content, it's turning into another VHS. Yuck.

Thanks for clearing that up Paff! Btw, love how you put it:

The proper ratio is the biggest draw here, but the anamorphic transfer also adds even more clarity, as well as sharper colors (or since this is a Canadian film, sharper COLOURS).

And is it just me, or is the full screen version stretching the picture width ? The two girls in your comparision shot look fatter in the FS transfer :)

I saw it in the theatres when it was originally released. My girlfriend and I both worked at a movie theatre, and I dragged her to see it. She wasn't too happy. She had already formulated an opinion on the movie based on it's tagline "They don't call it the curse for nothing". She thought it was stupid to compare the cycle of the werewolf with the menstral cycle. Personally, I think it was a genius piece of writing and an excellent metaphor.

I sat in the theatre, spellbound by the great acting, wicked humor, and great scares! She hurumphed her way through the entire thing. We had a very on again/off again relationship where she treated me like garabage and never respected my opinions, while I tried everything to please her. Eventually, I broke up with her for good when she refused to watch "older" movies on dvd in widescreen, because (and this is a direct quote!): "It's not the director's original vision". I shit you not folks!!!! I tried showing her director commentaries and documentaries where they voiced their delight at dvd presenting their "original vision", but she just dismissed them as "crazy". Can you believe it?!?!?! And then after a particular tirade of bitching about widescreen, she told me that she was planning to go to filmschool in Vancouver! HAHAHAHAHAHA! We split up soon after that, because I was sick of being in a one-sided relationship. Last I heard, she dropped out of film school. The profs probably kicked her butt big-time! :fire:

Sorry for the big rant, but I figured if anyone would understand how ridiculous that situation was, it'd be you guys. :D

But back to Ginger Snaps: excellent movie, excellent dvd. Haven't watched the commentary yet, but those audition tapes were quite cool.
