View Full Version : Why is there so much mind-numbingly bad music being put on horror soundtracks???

Not like there are many good horror movies coming out these days, but movie soundtracks used to be about complimenting the movie, not selling soundtracks and promoting big "artists" already backed by huge record labels! Sometimes movies like Texas Chainsaw Massacre have the best soundtracks - minimalistic sound effects that add to the atmosphere. I really liked the soundtrack to signs; the strings always gave a very unnerving feeling in all the right places. It seems to me that a movie is more successful with an original soundtrack taylored to fit the movie itself, rather than just adding catchy popular songs. I don't think its really necessary to name movies, but there is way too much shitty mallcore and other crap in movies now.... They never add to the movies! Ugh...
Merchandising.
The film industry and the music industry are exchanging handjobs for money.
Soundtracks these days are a huge business. Probably the most interesting phenomena is that recently, songs appear on the soundtrack that weren't even in the movie. Best case is the "Blair Witch Project" soundtrack. The movie didn't even have any fucking music in it! They passed the CD off as being a copy of the mix tape found in Josh's car.
Occasionally, though, you'll get a soundtrack that DOES fit the movie perfectly, like "Wicker Man" or "The Crow."

Agreed. Still, you do find a few winners every now and then, Donnie Darko is an example.

I don't remember the last time I wanted to buy a soundtrack cd, or any cd for that matter!!

Merchandising - that is for those FUCKING HATED "music inspired" by the fucking motion picture.
Although the David Lynch soundtracks are always absolute masterpieces. They _are_ inspired but not in the way the other clowns use the term.

I loved the soundtrack Donnie Darko too. The only thing at pissed me off was that there was never a release of the music in the film. They only did a score (which I bought and love), but it would have been great to have a disc of all those classic 80's tracks.

Cameron Crowe has great soundtracks for his films, the songs always appropriately chosen for each scene.
Vanilla Sky (not really horror, but still very disturbing in parts) uses some songs for very creepy results. Two examples being "Can We Still Be Friends" by Todd Rundgren, and "Good Vibrations" by the Beach Boys. Those who've seen the movie know what I'm talking about :D
But for the most part I agree with you guys. I nearly spewed when I heard that Creed song at the end of Scream 3.

Personally i've always enjoyed the music score to Rosemary's Baby which I have a pretty decent copy of on vinyl. I dont think all music is horrible these days unless your counting the mass marketed commercial bullshit they pass off to teeny boppers (i'm now including Ozzy in this catagory since Ozzfest hasnt been cool since 2000 and with the combonation of his whore they have been the driving force behind corporate cock rock proving he sold his soul to far worse than the devil). Then again I dont think anything I listen to will ever become mainstream since Black Metal would never appeal to anyone that wasnt white (this isnt a racist statement its just a fact that its roots are way to Saxxon and totally devoid of any connection musically to genres like Rythmn and Blues which I can appreciate on certain level just not my cup of tea and no im not into the whole NSBM scene). I would probably have a heartattack if I was driving down the road and something like Mourning Place by Dimmu Borgir or Triumph by Immortal came on either that or have that strange feeling up the back of my spine that we are one step closer to armaggedon.
I blame Rob Zombie :fuck:

I hear ya, I mean if Angelcorpse's Wolflust came on I would totally crash my car in excitement! :eek1: ;)

I blame Rob Zombie :fuck: Yeah him and Marilyn Manson. Over used artistic formulas make movie soundtracks songs sound like b-sides or throwaway tracks. I'd rather hear original songs from bands or orchestrated compositions. Even if there isn't a soundtrack (I Spit On Your Grave) I'd love that.

Within the context of the movie the songs are quite funny, and very appropriate in illustrating the sad state of Top 40 these days. However, they kind of mar the soundtrack a bit. They interupt the flow of the album. Other than that, the soundtrack is killer...god, I love crunchy power-pop! Maybe they could have stuck the Dujour songs at the end, as hidden tracks?

hey, the BWP soundtrack was cool, even though it was a scam. The CD had some great bands on it like Skinny Puppy, Bauhaus, Type O Negative, Laibach, FLA, The Creatures, & Meat Beat Manifesto!

The soundtrack for the first ROTLD was great. I also liked the oldies featured in AAWIL.

I'd like to know who told Hollywood that Rap went well with horror films, because I'd love to see them strung up by their testicles and flogged with bloody tampon strings made out of razor wire.

Sadly, it's because most of the population is brainwashed by the radio and television into liking that shit called music.

Gosh, I remember how horror movie soundtracks were good once!
I still can't believe that they didn't release The Howling soundtrack on CD. That's why I've create a online petition:):):)

But that's just the tip of the Iceberg. How many other good soundtracks are still unavailable?! ... ...

A soundtrack of Kubrick's The Shining would be nice, but that's wishful thinking. Heck, I would kill for a reissue of The Burning.

The only scores I collect are original compositions - not some shit bands from the MTV/Kerrang channel - who happen to be signed to a division of Warner.
I fuckin' hate scores when they're cobbled together from archive albums or trashy bands. If you wanna support 'the scene' - then buy the original artist's ablums/CDs. - They don't get a partcularly big cut anyway, because it's mostly kicked back to the publishers.
