I just sat through the Book of the Dead edition of Evil Dead. It's the first time watching this version (I got it for $15 when a store clerk screwed up).

Anyway, we all know the film. I could run off lots of inconsistancies in the flick, but what's the point? What I will ask is - why is the Book of the Dead not complete? That is, this DVD has the best packaging of any disk out there. We can grumble about the quality of the transfer (frankly the whole thing looked soft to me) but the packaging is what really makes this edition.

In the movie, Ash looks through the Book of the Dead, flicking through pages, so for laughs, I flicked through it with him :) Sadly, his had a page my doesn't! A stack of skulls. Bummer - does that mean I can't conjure the dead now?

Typical. The guys at Anchor Bay keeping all of the "Let's bring the dead back to life to kill everyone" spells for themselves!

I say phooey!

dwatts-love your avatar! If only that happened in the TV show!

I noticed the missing page too-the skulls on the stone floor. Was my favourite one, so it's absense was a bit obvious to me.

By the way-Has anybody read it all? I can work out roughly what some of it says.

Which page(s) did you have a problem reading?

The missing page was a formula on how to keep re-releasing dvds so that fans would keep buying them. If they put that page in the Book of the Dead edition, you'd all find out you were being taken advantage of!!

Man you really shouldn't be giving them ideas on how to re-release this shit.

Just wait, they'll re-release ED 2 & 3 each in the versions of the Book Of The Dead that those movies had. Hell, maybe AoD will come with the three books?:fire:

:D I just think it is odd they went to all that trouble and forgot an entire page (there are FOUR empty pages in the book!)

I know this film has been re-released a hundred times, but this was my first time buying it. I felt the picture was a bit soft. There is a 14 minute documentary as an extra, that has a lot of clips in it. I actually thought the clips has better color than the movie transfer! Maybe I was just tired --LOL--

Still, we all know this one. I have posted before saying I think it's just "okay" - but the price was right ($15 after a check out mistake) so I thought "why not". Glad I have it, but I can't see myself ever replacing/upgrading it.

If you're dissatisfied with the transfer, I recommend the Elite disc. It's full frame which is how I personally think the film looks best, and the transfer is much better looking. I like it infinitely better than the BOTD transfer, but have both for comparison, the extras, and of course the packaging. Plus I'm an EVIL DEAD nut, go figure. But then again, you said you aren't upgrading, so nevermind. It's cheap though.

Yes, it is true that I will NOT be upgrading this disc. I like the film enough, but not that much. I heard all the whining about the 4:3 going widescreen for the Book of the Dead edition. There are a couple of scenes in the film where it is obvious something is wrong with the widescreen version. At one point you see Ash's girlfriend walk to the end of the house, and he gets her present (necklace) out of his pocket and opens it up. In the Book of the Dead version, you can only see the very top of the box as he looks at it. That can't be right! It just looks odd.

But - I think the BOD edition is all about packaging. For those with the Elite version - I can see why they would want this one. They really went all out to do something different, I think.
