Just watched my Evil Dead 2 Limited Edition... boy, what a BIZARRE movie!! I didn't really like it the first time I saw it, but then I watched the theatrical trailer on horrordvds.com and it looked a whole lot better than I remembered it. So then the chance came and I was able to get the limited edition. I am sure glad I did, as it was MUCH better than I remembered it to be. Never a dull moment... and for such a short movie, it sure felt long! In many ways it is better than the original, but I won't go as far to say that it is totally superior. What does everyone else think about this strange and unusually cool movie? :D

By the way, I will probably be posting my review on the DVD in the Reader Reviews section sometime in the near future!

First one is better for me though.

I like comedy in horror but there's better ways to do it (ie Return of the living dead)

I also felt AOD was kinda weak but fairly watchable.

I think it's just the fanbase for these films that really bog them down. They're good yeah but for christsakes, they're not the jesus of horror. That award would go to Night of the Living dead :)

Well, being totally inconsistent, here the humor worked. It is a pretty good film. My gripe is that, ultimately, it treads much of the same ground as the original film, with different FX and ideas. They're a bit too close, imho. One of the best films ever? Nah, not by a long chalk - at least for me. It's a pretty good film, worth owning (I got it real cheap, around $12).

I've never even bothered to watch AOD, since I think the end of Evil Dead II is enough of that story line for me.

LOL!

Army of Darkness is my least favorite one, but I did enjoy it. The thing I think they should have done was have carried the second film into AOD, have it where ED 2 left off. Instead they had sort of had a little retread of the storyline in the beginning of the story, which kind of weakened the film a bit. It probably would have been much more powerful if they had done it like... let's say, Halloween 2.

I mean ... no other Evil Dead film has so many of Bruce's one-liners. Something about that film is just so utterly addicting. I find myself watching it once a week at the very least. I think it's the atmosphere of the movie and the set designs. I especially love the set used for the 3 necronomical books (graveyard with full moon and plenty of fog). Sam and his staff are brilliant. AOD shows this more than any other film IMO.

I can't stand Army of Darkness to be honest. And I can't believe I'm saying that, just a few years ago I would have told you it was one of my favorites. But I can't even sit through it anymore. The same can almost be said for Part 2... And Even Part 1 for that matter, I really just don't like these movies anymore!

Yeah I've been so busy getting new shit that each time I plan to finally get it, something new catches my eye and it gets bumped off my "to get" list.

yeah. thats happened to me on one too many occasion too! hell my list is a mile long at the moment so ive decided to break it into two lists

one list is a nostalgia list, movies that ive seen a hundred times and love and want to have on dvd... and movies that ive never seen but have been recommended to me..

Yeah, but I can't break my list down to just two like that... sometimes I have a hard time figuring out what I want next, but for now I know what I want... next DVD I'm getting is Virgin Among the Living Dead, then the Giallo Collection! :D

Isn't it funny how a thread starts out about one movie then shifts to another? First we were talking about Evil Dead 2 then AoD! Both movies are great, but I prefer Evil Dead 2. :D

This was the first Evil Dead movie I saw and I thought it was great and scary and exhausting when I first watched it.

I thought the part where all the furniture and Ash laugh for what seems like ever was really, really bizzare and creepy.

I picked up the DVD a few months ago and haven't watched it yet.

Its my favorite of the ED movies but I can see where folks who saw the first movie first would think that's the best 'cause that one is more of a straight horror movie, but since I saw this one first...

Now, when I saw Army of Darkness, I was a little dissapointed, 'cause I didn't really know how much of a comedy ED2 was and was expecting another exhausting thrill ride and got the Three Stooges Meet Hercules. I'm mostly over it now, but the voice over intro still grates on me a little.

But how can you stay mad at a movie that put so many words into Duke Nukem's mouth?

Right...Wrong, I'm the guy with the gun.

Hail to the King, baby.

Gimme some sugar.

has duke nukem got ANY original lines? he even stole the "its time to kick ass and chew bubble gum, and im all outta bubble gum" from They Live...

I watched AOD first when i was a teen and loved it, didnt realise there were another 2 films and so the intro was good to have... then i realised there were 2 more films and i saw the 1st one then the 2nd one... all 3 of the films are great in their own rights and all 3 of them are totally different movies so cant be compared i dont think..

having seen them all its very annoying that the 1st and 2nd dont join up properly (because of the rights to the film) and the intro/change over 2nd to 3rd is also annoying, but oh well.. i had all 3 on 1 LP VHS and tried to line them up so when 1 finished the next one started right where it left off.. dont ask me why, but it was a cool novelty at the time :nervous:

ps: whether it be because ive seen them all a zillion times or not i dunno, but i barely consider any of these movies as horror.. (if its not scary its not horror imho)

Call it horror or comedy or whatever, ED2 is fucking great. I've watched it literally hundreds of times and it never gets old.

I finally got to see it on the big screen (after seeing it on the small one probably over 50 times) and it was just AMAZING. I saw it in a packed movie theater and everyone loved it. I was kind of surprised to hear chicks screaming though... and plenty of people knew the movie by heart, me being one of them. I don't know how sad that is, but well, there ya go. ;)

Anyway, as soon as I heard the LE tin was coming out, I knew it'd be mine. Had I owned it when I met Bruce Campbell, I'd have had him sign the tin as well. He signed all three of my VHS covers of the Evil Dead movies, which just rocked. :)

The Duke Nuke 'Em people never gave a dime for the lines that they stole from what I understand.

If a movie has to be scary to be considered horror, there aren't many horror flicks out there at all.

Chalk me up as one who hated ED2 first time through.

Here's why....Evil Dead was one of the few movies to actually scare me as an adult.
I rented the sequel hoping for the same, and was disappointed that it was more humorous. Also, despite the claim that it continues the story of Evil Dead, let's face it, plotwise, it's pretty much a remake, only with more humor.

Now that I can appreciate the humor, I absolutely love it.

RyanPC
05-01-2003, 08:28 AM
Yeah, I too consider it a remake. It is similar to the first one except there is more humor and different characters...

Plus, you've got to love Bruce Campbell's one man show during the first half of ED2, it is just hilarious when he beats himself up like that!!!!! :p

Mortis
05-01-2003, 08:30 AM
Like someone has already mentioned, they couldn't make a true sequel because of the rights.

Yeah, that's pretty messed up. I remember when Duke Nukem first came out and I heard all the sound files and was like, "Heeeey... wtf!" ;)
If a movie has to be scary to be considered horror, there aren't many horror flicks out there at all. Seriously! I'm not sure if even a quarter of my collection actually scares me. Hell, like I said earlier, I was pretty shocked when some chicks were genuinely screaming at the theater during Evil Dead 2. Maybe I'm just desensitized though... that's a distinct possibility. ;)

I agree, there is only like a handful of movies that remotely scares me. Scary is not a requirement for being a "horror" film at all, at least not to me.

Of course, Evil Dead 2 is my favorite movie of all, so I would say that. :glasses:

ok, well scarey is a personal thing, but some films are designed to scare you (whether they do or not) and those films are horror films.. if i had to come out with a definition then that would be it... but i prefer not to define horror as there are too many sub genres and cross genres that it becomes possible to categorise 1 movie in more than 1 way

Evil Dead - Probably in my top 5 movies of all time. Relentlessly horrifying. Gory as hell. An utter, utter masterpiece

Evil Dead 2 - A worthy successor and a great film, but totally loses the scare factor with the over the top humour. And not gory enough.

Army Of Darkness - An OK movie. A very disappointing Evil Dead movie <ducks for cover>. I think the way too long battle sequence at the end ruined it for me along with all the cheesy & juvenile slap-stick skeleton humour.

Some disturb me, but I wouldn't call them scary... I think some people are just more scareable by nature. For instance, I have a young relative in my family (probably about 5 or 6 years old now) who absolutely couldn't watch ANYTHING with witches in it (and we're talking cartoon witches) because she'd run out of the room screaming and crying and wouldn't come back till the tape was gone. I'd wanted to get her "Kiki's Delivery Service" but I'd be afraid she'd have the same reaction, JUST because there's a witch in it. I'm 99.9% certain she'd cry, even though there's nothing evil or scary about the movie! Of course, that just smacks of phobia to me, but well, there ya go. :eek1:

There I go, off on a tangent again. It's 3:15am and it shows. ;) :sleepy:

I find it hard to describe a good chunk of my movies to most people. It gets too complicated unless you're actually into it, like I'd assume most people here are, so categories are a natural here. That may be stating the obvious though, heh.

What's considered scary is all quite personal as far as how horror affects an individual. I have a high tolerance for gore, whereas my friend can't even look at fake blood on a movie screen without shivering and turning away. What does this all mean?

Perhaps I should have been a surgeon.

Yeah I agree, I found Bumfights scary that people could treat others the way they did. I find Bowling For Columbine scary, and other documentaries of this type that show fucked up things done by humans. Or true story movies like Mothman Prophecies.

Evil Dead 2 was my favourite movie of all time until a saw Memento and Donnie Darko. Evil Dead 2 was the first DVD I bought - months before I even had a dvd player (I saw the limited tin in a shop, and in Australia you don't see stuff like that very often, so I had to buy it)

How's that scene go in 'High Fidelity'? "If you haven't seen Evil Dead 2 yet then you're a cinemagraphic idiot" or something along those lines. The filmaking side of Evil Dead 2 is amazing I reckon, the amount of filming techniques used and great camera shots. I thought it was far superior to the orignal, and AOD had none it same ED2 style to it - in this regard Darkman was more of a sequel to ED2 for me.

Army of Darkness was the first Evil Dead movie I saw, and I love it to pieces when I was growing up. Then I saw ED 2 and loved it even more, followed b watching ED which I too love. Just a great series all around IMO. It is tough to pick a single film because they are so dissimilar. One is a horror, one is a horror/comedy, one is a comedy/action. They all have their strengths and to this day I still watch each film at least once a year (especially with friends).
