"I'm destined to Hell, raped by the devil!"

So today i had the pleasure to check out VIP's fantastic disc of Jess Franco's Love Letters of a Portuguese Nun. How's the movie and disc? read on!

Video on this disc was fantastic. Remastered from the original negative and archive footage and presented anamorphic in its original theatrical ratio of 1.85:1, this release looks great.

Audio is presented in Dolby Digital 2.0 Mono with choices of English, German, Spanish or Italian languages. Only dubbed, no subs here.

Extra's we get a great assortment. Starting thing's off with the minor stuff, we get Cast & Crew bios which are always a welcome addition, along with a Production Stills section and a VIP Jess Franco DVD info/teaser section. On to the bigger, better stuff.. starting us off we get a handful of trailers-- Love Letters of a Portuguese Nun, Jack the Ripper, Ilsa: The Wicked Warden, Porno Shock, The Devilish Sisters, Blue Rita, Doriana Grey and Barbed Wire Dolls. Next up is a 17 minute restoration feature which was extremely interesting to me and i definitally recommend everyone check it out. Rounding things out, last but not least we have Interviews with Erwin C. Dietrich, Jess Franco and Herbert Fux with a special appearance by Lina Romay (who has aged WORSE then Daria Nicolodi-- IF you can imagine THAT!). The interviews intertwine with eachother and run all together for 8 minutes and were quite interesting.

Awesome disc which is stocked with some nice features, but the movie?...

It is about this girl Maria who is caught fooling with her boyfriend in the woods by a priest. The priest then takes it upon himself to talk to Maria's mother and recommend Maria join his convent in order to save her soul. Before long, we find that the convent is not what it seems and is infact filled with devil worshippers who practice satanic orgies, brutal torture, lesbianism, every kind of blasphemy and lots more!! It is now up to Maria to get the word out about the real goings on here, endure the intense torture put upon her and save herself from the awful convent. Will she be able to do it? you must watch and find out!!!!!!!

Well, as alot of you know, I am a pretty big Franco fan, but unfortunitly, I just havent been able to get into this movie as much as I do alot of his other movies. This just didn't "feel" like a Franco movie to me, and honestly, I find this to be one of his lesser efforts that I have seen, ranking right around his movie (Marquis DeSade's) Justine. Infact, speaking of Justine, this movie reminds me quite a bit of that flick in many ways-- the main way being they both drag on and are quite boring at alot of parts. Granted, Justine is approx 2 hrs long, this movie is only 87 minutes :(

Basically, I only recommend this to nunsploitation fans or people who absolutly need to see/own all of Franco's work. While its a cool disc, the movie just wont appeal to everyone and will probably bore alot of people.

Cool review Jeff. What did you think about the individual trailers?

All of the trailers were very cool

Jack the Ripper, Ilsa: The Wicked Warden and Barbed Wire Dolls dont interest me at all. I've seen Jack the Ripper before, and I didnt like it one bit.

Love Letters of a Portuguese Nun, Porno Shock, The Devilish Sisters, Blue Rita and Doriana Grey were all extremely awesome, and infact, after seeing the trailer, I went ahead and ordered Doriana Grey and preordered Porno Shock

Yeah, I saw the trailer of Doriana Grey on jess-franco.com and it was right raunchy. I think Xploited Cinema has it for order. Let us know if its good or not. ;)
