Wow, I just bought this AB release.
This is one of their earlier titles, so it lacks any features, really. The transfer is kind of yucky too. But nothing could save the film itself. This one is horrid, imho. Anyone like this?
I don't own many slashers. The murders were tame. The murderer totally unguessable. Eek, I was bored!

I agree. This is one of the most overrated slashers out there, and that's coming from a guy who loves most slashers. Extraordinarily dull, and the shitty disco dancing doesn't help matters any. I'm not a fan of this one at all, but the totally unrelated Part 2 is very cool in my book.

Yeah - the dancing was SO BAD --LOL--
I feel bad having spent $12 on this one, but I really fancied buying a decent slasher. What the hell was I thinking?!?!?! :)

Prom Night rocks! Overrated perhaps, but I enjoy it more than Terror Train - the other overrated Jamie Lee slasher (besides Halloween ;) )

TERROR TRAIN is actually one of my favorites, so I think it shits all over PROM NIGHT.

Fear the vengeance of rhett "mr. prom night" miller! :D
Man, I haven't seen PROM NIGHT since it was released on Video by MCA/Universal back then ...
I remember enjoying it quite a bit though and if ever a SE DVD comes out I'm buying.

Why not buy the current disc? Is it just extras you want? Or is it the transfer?
I'd be interested in reading a comment from rhett on why this film is worthy of attention. I do now own it, after all :)

Have you seen the third one yet?

Nope, not yet. Is it worth a look? If its half as good as the second, I'll check it out ASAP.

Yeah, I heard the transfer is pretty shitty ... and since there's talk of a SE from AB ... (imagine: a digitally remastered THX Audio DTS track & 16:9 Video transfer including the TV cut via seamless branching plus a "gun-held-to-their-head" FORCED audio commentary by JLC & Leslie Nielsen :D ).

Prom Night 3: Last Kiss is definitely worth a look. It has a high cheese factor and creative killings. This sequel was a blast!:D

The Last Kiss was ok but the "comedy" parts annoyed me. I heard there was a unrated version released on tape back then?
Personally I enjoyed Hello Mary Lou much better.

I like this movie, although the disc could be better. I really don't need to post though, as I totally agree with rhett's review down to the fine details. it was almost kind of odd.

Hm, just read the review from Rhett. I seem to be in a phase of disagreeing with him lately *gulp*. The disco scenes for instance were really grating (and boring). The rasping voice of the killer was overdone. I did not find the identity of the killer easy to guess at all - actually it came from out in left field referring as it does to a few seconds of footage right at the start of the film. I honestly could not find a scare in the entire thing - and the murders are really tame.
Still there are fans for everything. There isn't anyway on earth I'd buy an upgrade to this disc - not even for a dollar.
Now Rhett - we've got to agree on SOMETHING for Gooness sakes!

I guess I am biased towards the film. It is one of the first horror films I've ever seen, I love disco and I love Jamie Lee Curtis (and I am not affraid to admit either! :D). While I never found the film scary, I did think it had its moments, especially during the phone calls. It is a great pop culture document representing the early 80's, and that is a big reason why I love it. It's cheesy, it's Canadian and it has a great head chopping scene. What more can you ask for? ;)

I hate PROM NIGHT as well. The sequel was decent though, if I remember right.

My favorite part in the movie:
Teens are being slaughtered by the masked killer, and yet Jamie Lee Curtis and her date go and do a 10 minute dance-off against her snooty rival. The film partially takes a detour specifically to film all the disco excess in all its glory. Priceless.

Well here's something different. Idon't think Jamie Lee is sexy but I liked Prom Night. Something about her face just turns me off.

Prom Night was a really cool flick. I know a lot of people told me they saw the ending coming, but I didn't. I thought the ending was cool and the motivation from the killer was understandable.

Hello Mary Lou wasn't bad, either! :) Is there an R1 DVD of it?

Prom Night is my favorite slasher of all time.
I think the begining is very well done. Robin was such a nice little girl, and her death was very disturbing. She starts crying but the kids won't stop and you all know what happens next.
I hear alot of people say that Prom night has a very boring middle. I think that the middle is the best part. There is alot of character development. Also the slow build up of suspense makes you feel very scared and uneasy. First the phone calls, then the pictures, then people start being killed.
The disco rocks!!! Come on now people, whats so wrong with seeing Jamie Lee do the hustle for twenty minutes? WHat about that great music in the backround, "Prom Night, everything is alright... now more being uptight, baby cuz its Prom Night!! (Repeat 50 times)
Yes the murders are very tame, but still manage to scare the audience. The best part is how they were shot. I love the shot were Kelly is being killed and all you see is her face, and her eyes buldge.
Wendy has a nice chace scene. Its pretty long, but is still shot very well. Below is a cool shot of Wendy and the killer.
http://www.horrordvds.com/reviews/n-z/pn/pn_shot7l.jpg
Lou's death is my favorite. This death is not at all tame. His head flies right of the neck. You gotta love the sound it makes too.
Yes, the killer is very shocking, probally because we are given no clues to who he is. The fight with Nick and Alex at the end is priceless. Suddenly the strobe lights just happen to go on for no reason at all. So Alex and Nick fight... for a long time. Then Kim gets the axe and wacks him in the head. Alex stands up and looks Kim in the eye. This is one of the best parts. The acting from Jamie Lee is incredible. The look on her face tells you that she knows who he is just by making eye contact.
Probally the best editing is when Alex runs outside. He comes closer to the group, and then we see flashbacks of the beggining, KILL..Alex goes closer to the group...KILL...the group runs away...KILL...the police are about to shoot...KILL....Kim runs out and grab Alex as he falls to the ground. She hold him, rocking him back and forth, crying. She takes off the mask to reveal her own brother. He screams Robin, Robin, Robin. This is the most effective part of the movie. A very emotional ending that can really bring a tear to your eye.
I really want the DVD. It's been out of print for three years now. And the videos just went out of print. Are there any plans for a new DVD? I don't care about better picture quality, or new extras. I just wan't this film to be released on DVD again.

My favorite scene from Prom Night is as follows:
It's almost directly after the decapitation at the end of the film. The killer strikes for Jamie Lee's date and she proceeds to grab a chair and throw it at the assailant. Her body language, and the disco music in the background combined, make for quite an exhilirating scene. :D It only lasts for about a second but man what a second.

My favorite scene is when the credits come up. Liked this film when I was like, eight, but I was really unimpressed when I saw it a year ago (27 years old). Others watching it with me were also bored. But as usual, to each their own.

The disco screen is simply a classic.
