View Full Version : What Are Your Top 10 Asian Horror Movies - Start Nominations!

Right back at the start of the Asian horror forum, I suggested that after a while there'd be a Top 10 thread for the Asian Horror genre. Since those early days, the forum's been extended to "other pleasures" but, due to the popularity of the horror genre, there have been very few non-horror threads.

If you post your 10 favourite Asian films (or Top 5), I'll collate the votes and come up with a definitive Top 10 for the board members in, say, a month's time. It would be great to keep the films purely horror (if you're really passionate about a John Woo film, I may start a Top 10 Asian non-horror film list later).

All films score 1 point so order isn't important.

To start the ball rolling, my Top 10 (at this moment in time) is as follows:

Tetsuo: The Iron Man
Evil Dead Trap
Audition
Ichi The Killer
Battle Royale
Tell Me Something
Ring
Uzumaki
Run And Kill
The Eye

Let the voting begin!:D

I need to see more good asian horror movies before I can add any more. I'm sure Battle Royale, Uzumaki, Kairo and some others are all classic but I haven't seen them yet.

1. Eko Eko Azarak 1
2. The Untold Story
3. Battle Royale
4. Suicide Circle
5. Bio Zombie
6. Evil Dead Trap
7. Flowers of Flesh & Blood
8. Mr. Vampire
9. Ebola Syndrome
10. Devil Fetus

Not all of them are particulary outstanding or anything, but those are the better... Eko Eko Azarak 1 is the best asian horror film I've ever seen. I'm glad to see that Wild Zero has been largely ignored.

Ahh! I can't believe I left out Ebola Syndrome on my list. Add another vote for Ebola. I only listed 9 movies anyways. ;) Good choices McChrist. There are a couple on there I haven't seen so I MUST check them out. When this list is finally compiled I'll probably go on an asian DVD shopping spree. :D

Although the below films are great, I don't know if I would consider them horror. Some are social commentaries while the others are your typical asian rape flick. Which may very well be horror for those made of the rib.

Battle Royale
Suicide Circle
Ichi
Dead or Alive
Brother of Darkness
Daughter of Darkness
Fudoh

I'm not a woman but enough repulsive things happen in Daughter of Darkness that I go on and consider it horror. I almost consider Visitor Q a horror movie. It sure does feel like one.

 My uncle lived in Japan for 15 years and still goes to and from Japan pretty often. He talks like Japan is the most perfect place in the world. Maybe I should show him Visitor Q.

I really don't care for the Tetsuo films. I can watch them from time to time, but the only reason I own the VHS of the first is for Drum Struck.

Keep the votes coming in, guys.:)
I'm going to do a "Votes So Far" summary at the end of the week / over the weekend so we can see what's in pole position at this early stage, etc! If there are loads of movies tied for certain positions, I may introduce a second round of voting to fine-tune the selections.
The excitement is killing me....:D
(Reading these lists has helped me build my "Wants List" for the coming 6 months....great taste!)

As anticipated, there were a lot of films racing for the coveted Top 10 places.

To keep things moving along, I've decided to move onto the next stage early. Thanks for all your votes, I'm sure everybody's noted a few titles for future purchases...my wants list has certainly grown again!

In Round One, these are the 10 movies which are proving the ones to watch....

Audition - 12 Votes
The Ring - 11 Votes
The Eye / Kairo - 8 Votes
Evil Dead Trap / Battle Royale / Uzumaki / Untold Story - 6 Votes
Ichi The Killer / Tell Me Something - 5 Votes

After these 10, there were a few nearly rans:

Dark Water, Ebola Syndrome and Bio Zombie scored 4 points.
Junk and Tetsuo scored 3 points.
Don't Look Up, Freeze Me, Dr Lamb, Fudoh, Perfect Blue, The Isle, Red To Kill and Cure managed 2 points.
Everything else scored a solitary 1 point....including Versus!

My spider-sense tells me that if we repeat this exercise in 12 months time, the ranking will be very different.

Now we've found the Top 10 films, it's time to rank them in order of preference.

Round 2 is to commence.......
