View Full Version : MadMan/Kropsy Maniac Legend

I just read another review on the upcoming madman dvd.Anyway it stated that on the commentary track that the director discussed how the original script for MadMan was written with a basis on a true New York campfire legend of The Kropsy Maniac. When they found out about The Burning being filmed (also using the Kropsy Maniac legend)they altered the script to create the madman we all know today.(and I know that it's spelled Cropsy in The Burning,But I guess it's spelled Kropsy in the legend)
My question is,Does anyone here know anything about the original Kropsy Maniac legend? I would love to actually read how the old tale went. Also,as I recall,on this site's review of madman it mentions another similar film being made nearby,Does that mean that Madman was filmed at the around the same time/location as The Burning?

Yep they were both being filmed at the same time...
MadMan is a good slasher, but The Burning is definitely superior.

Great post gunner! I didn't really think anything of THE BURNING...until I leafed through a copy of Tom Savini's "Grande Illusions" make-up and special F/X how-to guide, where Tom himself, talking about the Cropsy Maniac, says "he was taken from a true story". Naturally, that CREEPED ME OUT.....and still does! I tried doing searches through some newsgroups about the actual Cropsy story.......but haven't found anything yet. :(

I actually got the tale which I posted on the forum at www.fridaythe13thfilms.com about a year ago.I couldn't find anything very informative on the net but actually got the tale from an older coworker who used to be a boyscout troop leader in upstate New York.My memory of the tale isn't with me right now but I'll search the friday forum,if that fails I'll ask him to tell me it again, either way I'll post it here. When you hear the tale it actually contains elements that were used for both The Burning and MadMan.As for if the legend is true,or has a basis in fact I still don't know.

After watching Madman the other day I was browsing the net to find more info about the Cropsey Maniac legend but as it turns out, there isn't much info to be found.
However, there is a documentary about Cropsey w/ website:
Interesting, but doesn't shed too much light on the mystery.
