Hey everyone...

I was just thinking to myself....dont you hate when your favorite movie comes out on dvd and its bare bones. To those who have a dvd burner, I thought it would be cool to rip your dvd (which is legal if its yours and you arent selling it), and do some research to find your OWN extras, the re-burn your movie on a blank dvd, add your extras and make the menus with a dvd burning program. For instance, try to find some lobby cards or press kits on the movie, then scan the photos, and there u have your own photo gallery to add, keep an eye out for any tv specials or the like on the particular movie....and if u can do a video capture straight from your tv, now u have even more extras to add!! I assume at this point, everyone knows what I'm talking about. Just think, the version of the dvd that you make for yourself will be the only one like it in the world....since everyone's else's would be unique :D

BTW....side note.....I was told yesterday by a friend who works at a video store that in February, they are putting out a 3-disc Dawn of the Dead, it'll have all 3 cuts of the movie and loaded with extras!!! :banana:

For personal use I think your idea would be cool if I owned a dvd burner. But your Dawn of the Dead news is old. The new release has been discussed many times on this very board. Do a search and you may find more info on it than what your friend told you.

oh, lol, it was news to me, guess I'm outta the loop :D

but anyway, yeah whoever owns a dvd burner....I think this is a cool idea, plus when searching for your own extras, you get the thrill of the hunt...and you can brag to yours friends about how much cooler your own little "special edition" is compared to their bare bones dvd :lol:

I'm just plain confused. Why bother ripping the movie? Just burn your extras to a DVD if you must. Are you just trying to save yourself having to swap discs? Erm, I have the time to do that the ONE time I'd look at lobby cards.......

i dont really mind if the movie is barebones. if it has a great transfer, good sound, and a cheap price..it doesnt usually bother me. special editions are always a plus tho.

I think that it should be in the director's claus that he has to do (1) commentary for every movie he makes. Am I right? I mean, how hard is it to watch a movie?

Wel, some commentaries SUCK. You'd have a hard time making them give us GOOD commentaries, now wouldn't you?

Anyhow, I disagree that every movie should have a commentary - it's an EXTRA not a requirement. In ther words, a nice to have, but not something is has to have.

Well, you never know if the movie you are about to see is your favorite. Like, when I saw THE CRUSH, I loved it but was sad that it didn't have a commentary. Can we agree that every movie should have a trailer? I mean, filmographies are just a cheap premotional item, usually you only see filmographies on movie where there is a huge star...But some filmographies (Blast From The Past & The Changeling) are outstanding.

one bad thing about ripping movies is if the movie is on a dual layered disc, you're gonna have to de-code it to fit onto a single layer (and even more so if you're wanting to add extras). most bare bone discs (unless they have multiple audio tracks) are single layer to begin with, but they take up almost all of the room on the disc (so you'll have to de-code them as well and make it smaller to make room for extras). i'd say just burn an extra discs and buy a dvd case that holds two discs instead of one.

A trailer is nice, a commentary is nice. But they're not requirements. You were sad The Crush didn't have a comentary? Well, I guess I have favorite films of my own, and that I always want more of a good thing - but making anything like that mandatory would be problematic. I don't want crap I'm not going to listen to - that's for sure.

That's why we need well thought out extras, done by people who care. Not just any old extra put on to fulfill contractual obligations.

I agree with rxfiend.

It would work best to simply make a scond disc of your own special "extras," and keep it with the original movie. Compressing the original movie to fit more stuff on would not be a great idea IMO.

I do really like the idea of making your own special disc of extras for the movie though. That would be fun.

I agree. I generally don't watch the bonus features anyway, unless there is an alternate ending or something. I could care less about director commentaries. If you want to impress me, make sure the movie has a nice transfer, anamorphic widescreen presentation, and DTS (or at least DD 5.1) sound.
