Trelkovsky (director Roman Polanski), a Polish immigrant residing in Paris, moves into an apartment vacated by a young woman who committed suicide by leaping out of her window. Upon moving in, Trelkovsky begins feeling that the woman's personality traits are being thrust upon him. At a local shop, the proprietor offers him the breakfast and cigarettes that the woman usually purchased -- and he accepts them. Holed up in the psychotic environment of a dark Parisian building that's peopled with odd characters, Trelkovsky feels himself overcome by a kind of madness. His slow mental deterioration finally compels him to emulate the woman's final, tragic hours. Polanski's twisted and darkly comic thriller was nominated for the Golden Palm (Best Picture) at the 1976 Cannes Film Festival.

This sucker is going for $5.99 on DDD. I ordered it - what shall I expect?

My copy shipped from DDD on Tuesday.....I rarely ever purchase movies that I haven't already seen....but, at this price, I thought I would take a chance. I'll leave some feedback after I watch it......which I hope is soon......:)

Great! It'll be weeks before it gets to me, so let me know if I just threw $6 down the drain. Like you, the price was just too hard to resist - and I wanted to order something with Old Dark House :)

I thought The Tenant was simply brilliant.
Weird, sometimes funny, creepy and very dark.
It has a certain "Lynch" feel to it but then again not really.

Anyways, I won't say more because hype can kill all the fun!

I agree that "The Tenant" deserves the red carpet treatment regarding a DVD release and I'm a bit wary as well regarding the low, low price of the one available now. The old adage, "You get what you pay for" is so often true. I'll wait for further reports from all you fine people on how this particular DVD looks and sounds before I purchase it myself. I very much agree that this is one excellent, brilliant film and all reviews I've come across give it extremely enthusiastic reactions. :)

Just ordered mine from Deep Discount DVD. I've never seen it before, but for $5.99, you can't beat that.

I also ordered The Crazies and Road Games. Can't wait. :)

My copy arrived yesterday, and I watched it last night. The transfer is just beautiful, and I found absolutely no problems with it. Too bad Paramount wouldn't include more than a trailer though.

I'm picking this up for sure as it's an awesome film. I'm glad that more Polanski films are getting released... and all it took was for him to win an Oscar!!!

I love this film. My favorite Polanski - very close to 'Repulsion.' I received my copy on Wednesday and watched the credit sequence only. The transfer looks quite good. I can't wait t watch it again. And it was so cheap!

I'm also a big fan of Roland Topor - who wrote the book the movie is based on. You might remember Topor as Renfield in Herzog's 'Nosferatu'. I love Topor's art work, doodlings, poetry... I accidentally walked by his grave in Paris recently, and was pleased to see his artwork on the tombstone. He was a wonderful Surrealist artist. The credit sequence in the anti-Fascist Surrealist film, 'Viva la muerte,' is also his work. I have a wonderful French poster of the 'Tin Drum' that is also designed by him. He's everywhere if you look closely enough.

Did you like it?

It was filmed well. Did I like the story? I dunno, I was expecting something a little more cerebral, and not so blatant and over the top from what I'd read about it. I was expecting something much more psychological.

On first watch it seems kind of like the shock, revelation scene of Psycho played out for half the movie - not much more going on than shock value. I fuckin' cracked up at the Sergio Leone-esque close-up on Polanski and he says "I'm pregnant." Trippy.

Yeah I rented this one over the weekend - some great scenes - I was perhaps expecting more of an explanation at the end - but that's ok - still a good movie. "Chinatown" will always be my favorite that he's done - and one of my favorite films period...

Did anyone else notice some interesting editing on the dvd version of this movie?

On the dvd during the opening credits, there are two spots where Trelkovski is shown standing in the window of the building.
In the original opening, it is only one Trelkovski, in the shot where he turns into Simone Schule.
There is also another spot where Simone is shown in the window, in the brown flowered dress.
I also don't remember seeing people moving around behind the curtains of the building.

Also, in the scene where he is first moving into the apartment and playing the radio, the song is different than the original version.

I have two versions of The Tenant on VHS as well.
In the older of the two, the music is completely different on the moving in scene, and also the beginning of the party scene.
The newer VHS has different music again, and the dvd has music that is different from both of the VHS copies.
Liscensing issues maybe?

Odd, no?

I'd say the Tenant is an alright movie. Nothing special though in terms of story. Mutley pretty much summed my thoughts of the movie. Isabelle Adjani was hot as hell in this movie but unfortunetly we dion't see her that much in it. ;)

Yes, it is odd! I hadn't seen the film in a long time, so I don't remember; I'll look at my old VHS copy of it and see for myself. I know the film was stuck in a mire of copyright issues last year, which delayed its release. Maybe the music issue is related.

Has she ever been nude in anything? She's amazing! :)

She was briefly nude in Possession which will be in an upcoming Anchorbay double pack with Shock. Possession is MUCH weirder and WAY more confusing than the Tenant but I liked it better.

I just chequed my old VHS copy of 'The Tenant' and the scenes you describe are all the same on the new DVD release. My tape is the 1982 Paramount release (with a previous copyright with Marianne Productions - 1976).
