Im a huge fulci fan--have a ton of his films, the fab book, beyond graphic novel/cd etc...

but in all this time there are a few films I still havent checked out-mostly due to people telling me they are bad. This seems silly as I like a lot of stuff others dont---so should I check out...

Manhattan Baby?
Demonia?
Aenigma?

I am the last one that should be recommending any Fulci film, because I find that most of his films are wasted opportunities.

BUT...

I do know that Aenigma has an infamous "death-by-slugs" scene that is supposed to rival any other "death-by-slugs" scene in any other movie... hehe...

I am kind of joking about my opinion of Fulci, I really do kind of like watching the films, for better or worse.

Demonia has a couple good death scenes that saved it in the end, but the rest is kinda boring.

Aenigma: The movie is pretty boring I thought. Highlights:
There is an unintentionally (?) creepy song playing in the opening scenes. A cool atmosphere thoughout. From what I remember none of the death scenes were any good. I barely even remember the slug death. It ws just a woman lying there with slugs all over her screaming.
I've read that the Image DVD is cut? I seriously doubt those 4 minutes would add to the movie and they are not gore scenes or anything.

Never seen Manhattan Baby.

For a really good obscure Fulci film try "Touch of Death".

Isn't touch of death one of the films whose scenes are included in cat in the brain? Is touch of death available on dvd? I am region free so it could be any release...

Manhattan Baby is pretty bad. I would recommend it only to huge Fulci fans or people who wanna see all his work.

It has one (maaybe 2) cool death scenes and the awesome Giovanni Frezza (Bob from House by the Cemetary) as its 2 saving factors to keep it from a complete waste.

yep, Cat in the Brain has scenes from this. It's on NTSC region 0 DVD from EC Entertainment. I heard Synapse had the distribution rights in America but that was way over a year ago and could have just been a rumor.

EDIT: It looks like this DVD maybe out of print.

I paid ~$10 for mine. It is pretty pricey sometimes. If you run across one in $10-$15 range pick it up. If it ever gets on eBay it will probably sell for cheap unless the seller has a high minimum. Good luck finding an affordable copy. If I run across the DVD for cheap I'll let you know.

You know, as films they're flawed. But these arn't films, they're Fulci films. Since you're such a big Fulci fan (as I am) you know that you're going to have to look passed some flaws.

Now, that's not to say there are some serious flaws you might not be used to seeing, even in Fulci films, for these titles. But what the hell - this IS FULCI and they're really worth checking out, imho.

I just have never seen Aenigma. Didn't it just get an uncut R2 release?

THe Zeder disc is the new Region 2 one-not the image one. I should have both next week. Since I have NY ripper only on VHs, ill probably ge the 2 pack with manhattan baby eventually. And Over time Im sure ill end up with aenigma, daemonia, etc....

By the way--that Beyond graphic novel is okay, but the CD with it ROCKS!!!!!

Andrew, that Zeder disc has some scratches and stuff on the print used for the DVD. Also the image isn't very sharp. I'd rate it a 5/10 for video. I'm not picky at all about video quality but this one is noticeably not very good.

Movie wise, not too great. It has it's moments but it was mostly a story I just wasn't very interested in so it bored me mostly. Hope this helps.

Ah okay, thanks for the info. I'd heard great things about the movie but not-so-great things about the disc, but I think I'll pass. Maybe if a nicer version comes out in R1 in the future I'll snag it.

Of the three fulci films:
-"Manhattan Baby" - I really enjoyed it. The cinematography in Egypt was the highlight for me.
-"Aenigma" - It was okay. The death by slugs is the best part.
-"Demonia" - I enjoyed this the least of the three but I still own the DVD. The highlight for me was that it took place in Toronto, which was cool even thought I live in Vancouver.

As for the Image "Zeder" DVD: I don't own it but I did rent it and the video quality is bad, it's full frame, and there are no extras. I love the movie, though. It's not a typical zombie film, which is what throws most people (I think) but there are some pretty creepy moments.

I love Fulci, especially his horror. But, I have tried to watch Demonia at least 7 times and have fallen asleep within the first 10 minutes each and everytime. It reaks but at least the first 10 minutes is better then the entire New Gladiators.
